Anniekim: Not that canned beans are so *bad* per se, but there is a clear difference in the taste. Id say the dried ones (in the bag) have a more distinct taste when you cook with them.
But if you're throwing together a quick cold bean salad (like with kidney beans, chick peas, white beans, maybe navy beans - garlic, fresh parsley, little lemon juice, salt/pepper) kinda
thing, canned works.
But if Im making rice and beans, and used canned beans - my family would notice the difference right away. Crazy really.
Alisha, thanks for the info! And why are canned beans bad? I think that is all we have ever used! Esp the obligatory black eye peas (with ketchup) on New year's day!
Oh, and here is a fun fact! Kidney beans raw = deadly poison!
I'm spanish too so I know my beans pretty well, for my favorite bean I would have to go for the red bean, its what my mom typically uses in her rice so I love it. A close second would have to
be black beans.... mmmmm
Alisha--thanks for the feedback. I'll use dried next time!
I guess it's like the difference between canned green beans and frsh or frozen. All markedly different.
I chose green beans as that's what's usually eaten in my house/ served in the cafeteria on campus, but I like all types of beans. Even jelly (had to throw that in).
For those of you asking about the canned beans being bad for you it is because they tend to be super high in sodium like most canned food. Plus some brands are heavier on the preservatives.
I like to cook dried beans in larger batches(Throw some garlic, onions, and herbs in the water for added flavor)then I freeze them in ziplocs and pull them out when I need them. As convenient
as cans but way healthier and cheaper!
krazykarot- I'm SO with you! I LOVE lima beans... you HAVE to use the frozen ones and use butter and S&P but I've gotten so many of my friends to love them too! My Dad used to call me
lima bean when I was little b/c I loved so much!
It depends, I love chana masala and falafel so garbanzo beans are up there, but my husband puts fresh black beans in his chili recipe and they are sooo delish.
I love beans, blacks are my favorites. My family is Dominican and when my grandmother visits New York she always makes a white bean stew called "Caldo Gallego", it's delicious.
Ema- If you tried buying frozen and boiling then adding butter, S&P and a bit of garlic salt/ powder you may think different... I'm a Lima Bean pusher! haha
love black beans and so does my hubs so I cook them alot, red or pink beans (roman or pinto GOYA beans), Im Spanish as well and we make a lot of the rice ands peas
(arroz con guandules - moro de guandules)
nikodarling: I do the same thing I used to see my mom do it.
Just so it during the weekend. Also pressure cookers cook them
the best.
I'm originally from New Orleans, so I love red beans (not canned, but slow cooked from scratch!) with andouille and tasso ham; so good. Also, lima beans and, I don't know if they're
technically beans, but vegetarian split peas with a touch of sesame oil and red wine vinegar.
Black beans are my favorite, but I've never met a bean I didn't like. And I agree -- home-cooked beans are best (I love my crock pot and my pressure cooker), but I'll resort to canned beans
in a pinch.

This soup ends up being a good source of three blood pressure-lowering minerals since the milk adds calcium and the potatoes deliver a dose of potassium, as well as magnesium.
Im Puerto Rican, you KNOW Im all over this poll right? LOL
As a person who has eaten rice and beans (every day!) for my entire life, I have some strong opinions about them.
Absolute favorite? Kidney beans.
NEVER would I eat a canned bean, I dont cook with canned beans (thats just unheard of in my family)
1What is the bean name for black eye'd peas, or are they really peas?
2Black eyed peas are beans, not peas. Then there are also black beans, but they are not one in the same.
I have no idea why they are called that though.
3all of those beans are great--but the lentil is the easiest to cook, for me.
4Alisha--are canned beans really so bad?
