The worst part of peeling vegetables is the clean up. I used to peel them over the sink and then scoop everything up afterwards. It was a slimy sensation that I decided I could live without. Now I place a few layers of newspaper on the bottom of the sink before peeling. When I'm done I just wrap it all up and toss the whole thing out.

Awesome!
I also follow rachel ray's advice on keeping a bowl while I'm cooking so peelings and other excess stuff goes there. Now my boyfriend follows me on this.
Thanks for the advice!
1What a fantastic idea! I pull my trash can out from under the sink, peel my vegetables into it while trying to stave off a curious toddler and a eats-anything dog and STILL have a few strays that have to be hunted down and picked up when I'm done. Sheeew. SO doing it your way from now on!
2I also use paper towels when I run out of newspaper. Two to three Bounty paper towels seem to do the trick!
3Don't you have a garbage disposal?
4Sadly, my current house is old and doesn't have one, but fortunately my neighborhood actually picks up compost waste, so I toss it all into the green bin!
Also, from what I understand, not all garbage disposals handle potato peels very well, especially when there's a lot. A few peelings should be fine, but a lot of peels may turn into a gooey pasty mess and clog the blades.
5Yikes, I'll be more careful next time, I throw everything down the garbage disposal!
6OH NO! Garbage disposal+peel=plumber. All bad. We had to take my sink apart when my sister did this.
7We use paper towels, it works so well!
Yah, I'm pretty sure the previous owners threw a lot down the drain as our garbage disposal is totally kaput. When we replace it (soon!), it'll will last forever since I throw almost nothing down there.
8yumsugar, This is a GREAT idea!! I don't peel often, I'm horrible at it so, the hubby does it for the most part. We always throw it down the garbage disposal but, not any more now. Thanks for the the tip!!
9I just told my husband the tip. He said, he puts coffee grounds down our disposal, it keeps the pipes clean. I guess that's why we haven't had any trouble.
I'm still sticking to this tip to be on the safe side.
10Coffee grounds... another up in the air subject. Some people swear it's bad for the pipes (i hear they clump and clink to the inside of the pipes), others say they've done it for years and no problems. I think this may require a larger discussion in the future...
11I still pretty much use the garbage can method. I usually use a walmart bag or something on the counter to throw all my garbage in. The paper towel trick is a good one though. Thanks for the tip!
