Recently, philleif surprised the office with a box from Zabar's. He's recently moved from New York and had a hankering for their fresh lox and bagels. I was lucky enough to grab a taste (thanks again philleif!), but it got me wondering, would you order food from across the country?

Repetto
Hogan
Manoush
Meh, depends on what I'm craving.
I could never live with out Dunkies vanilla chai.
1things we buy in the grocery store are already shipped cross country so what's the difference really? If you're getting them direct from the source, it's probably fresher than the store! On that note, I try to buy locally from the farmer's market as much as possible!
2we order a 1/2 lemon 1/2 caramel doberge cake from a bakery in New Orleans and have it overnighted every year for my birthday.
3I really try to buy local as much as humanly possible. That said, my parents ship me wild rice, maple syrup, and honey that they've made/harvested, so there isn't much of a difference between that and ordering bagels from New York. Still, I try to keep that to a minimum.
4I, too, think it is really important to support local farmers and producers for a number of reasons. That being said, I live pretty far from my family and food was a big part of our culture. Sometimes a care package of a unique item from "home"can be important.
5The mail is pretty quick with orders that might spoil, and so far the packaging has been done well. I only order stuff for special ocassions, and only after i've been craving it for a while.
6I ordered a cake from Dean & Deluca for my father-in-law's birthday.....totally worth it!
Well whenever somebody of my family is coming I ask for stuff from my country so that's more than just order from across the country
!
7Some of the stuff that I ask for is Oreos, White cheese, Chocolate, Instant tea; is easy have someone to bring them than order them
Not sure about ordering or not ordering, but I didn't have breakfast and that picture is basically food pornography for me right now...YUM.
8I'd order across the Atlantic if were possible.
9Zabar's is certainly worth ordering from! When we lived in Texas, I used to order shrimp from South Carolina because I didn't like the taste of gulf shrimp. So my answer is a resounding 'YES'! Order away!
10Would and have. Right now, the only place for me to find my favorite Irish Steak sauce is a company based across the country. If the local markets stop carrying my Irish oatmeal, I'll be getting that too.
11I order food online all of the time. It's usually for members of my family on special occasions and items that they can't get where they live (Vermont maple syrup, fresh lobster or blueberries from Maine). I did once order a turducken from a place in New Orleans a few years back. It was fun, but I've now satisfied my urge to try turducken and won't do that again.
12Of course- I miss my east coast food! I order both Dunkin Donuts and Wawa coffee online and my mom regularly ships me salt bagels and Herr's Pretzels. I've also been known to FedEx cupcakes from this side to my best bud in NY.
13Is it reliable to order online?
14I will occasionally order local specialties, like jars of olive salad from New Orleans, that I can't get here. I don't think I'd order fresh food though.
15I ordered bread from France for my boyfriend's 25th birthday!
16I order the best pecan pie I have ever tasted from River Street Sweets in Savannah Georgia. Pricey, but worth it!
17it was nova, not lox
. sooo good.
18as long as I know it's properly preserved...yeah....without hesitation!
19I never had lox...i'm scared to try...
20I really miss NJ food, so I've looked into getting some stuff shipped. Some of it (pork roll!) I've found after questing a bit, and some (Surf Taco!) can't really be mailed. Christmas is going to be filled with stuffing my face with diner food and Surf Taco and Wawa, mmmmm.
(Not that I hate the South. They have BBQ like we had diners! It almost makes up for the lack of disco fries.)
21I would have something special shipped. It's pricey, but if you have that craving, or it's for an event it would be worth it.
22Nope.
23I'd need to want something pretty bad to order it from so far.
24If you can get it, why not. Otherwise, if I plan a trip to that place, I would just buy tons of it and stuff it in my suitcase.
25yes! and when friends have been out of the country i have sent them things they couldn't get (once it was peanut butter). we order from omaha steaks all the time.
26Steak in the mail? MKy goodness
27I order Nokkelost cheese from New york every holiday, its a norwegian cheese flavored with Cumin, caraway seeds and cloves. Semi-hard and yellow, made from cows milk. Expensive but its my childhood on a cracker.
Right now i can get it from www.nordicdeli.com for 12.95 a pound plus shipping.
I have also ordered food that i have seen on the deen boys show.
28Devil Dogs! Stella D'oro! My husband and I are very lucky to have Boar's Head in Indianapolis, but I had my mom send me Annie's mac 'n cheese for years until I begged for it here (before I started making homemade mac'ncheese)My husband would definitely have Zabar's shipped here if he knew he could. We miss New York most weeks!
29HMM for a muffuletta from Central Grocery in New Orleans. I sure as heck would.
30Too $$$.
