Even when it's just my family at Thanksgiving, I always find it fun to seat everyone by using place card holders. They are simply festive and make it feel more like a holiday. You could run to Williams-Sonoma and buy some, but with a little creativity, you could make them! I quickly made the ones pictured at right using real apples. To see how I made them, read more
You will need the following supplies:
- mini apples
- cards or cardstock cut down to size
- knife
- cutting board
- glittery pen
Here's what you do:
- Break or cut the cardstock into separate pieces.
- Practice your decorative handwriting. Decide which style suits your table setting: cursive, loopy, sleek, etc.
- Write out the name of each guest on the cards and set aside.
- Cut a small slice in the top of the apples. Make sure to do it on one side of the stem, being careful not to go all the way through. Wiggle the knife a little to make sure the slice is big enough to fit the cardstock.
- Slide the card inside the apple. Voila! Instant and adorable place card holders!

What a totally cute idea! I love it!!! And it's right on the nose for m price range.
Thanks, Yum!
1And you can use pears, pomagranates, persimmons, little pumpkins, etc. The options are endless! Okay... I'm so inspired right now!!!
2I'm doing basically the same thing, but with decorative little gourds (and I'm only cutting in the stems).
3Neato!!
4Does the juice seep onto the card and stain it?
5michichan: I've had the cards sitting on my desk all week and the only area of the cards with juice on them is the part that has direct contact with the cards, so no not really.
6What a cute idea! I might use it for my wedding next October!
7I love this idea!
8I will definitely be stealing this idea!
9These are so cool!
10Thanks party, I'd nevr think it.
11So cute! I love them... definitely going to steal the idea... and like mentioned above use all different kinds of fruit!
12adorable - i kinda get how to do it without the instruction - hehe! just teasing - cute!
13I dunno whether to think of it as a good idea or the waste of a perfectly good apple. Doesn't the area around the cut turn brown? Could the rest of the apples be used for a pie, strudel, tart? hmm... I dunno.
14I think I'll be trying this tomorrow.
15So cute and inventive. I bet it would be adorable with small pumpkins too! Thanks for the idea party!
16This is a really cute idea but what would be even cuter is instead of putting a card with the persons name in the apple is putting a cute picture of the person in the apple!
17awww yes!!
