A couple of weeks ago, TeamSugar and I headed out to Lafayette (east of San Francisco) and trekked out to a fancy pants high school where Anthony Bourdain was speaking. As you may have figured out, I have a slight infatuation with him and was quite eager to hear what he had to say. Would he be as brash in person? Would he complain about Rachael Ray? Or would he be slightly humble and have intelligent things to say? The answer to all of those is yes. He was brash, yet humble. He railed on Rachael, but he also gave a great perspective on our food industry.
The talk was hosted by The Commonwealth Club of California and is actually available online. To get the link to the audio, as well as read some of my favorite bits — including his run down of your fave Food Network chefs — read more
- On vegetarians:
"How do you travel? I like a clean colon just as much as anyone, but [vegetarianism] just seems rude." - On Ina Garten:
"She's good. See, I surprised you. I might not want to spend a weekend at her weird house in the Hamptons, but she's good. She raises expectations and actually teaches you something." - On Mario Batali:
"He's godlike, a walking buddha." - On Emeril Lagasse:
"He's good for the world. I don't like the show either, but he raises expectations." - On Sandra Lee:
"Good or evil? I don't think there's any questions there." - On Rachael Ray:
"She scares me. She could have me killed with what she spends on Triscuits each week." - On cooking and eating:
"Cooking is about domination and being in control. Eating, however, should be a submissive act." - On opening his own restaurant:
"Life's good. Why would I want to go and f**k it all up by opening a restaurant?" - On the slow food movement:
"[The slow food movement] is really important. Anything that improves things is. But do I think the world will go that way? No way. I like Whole Foods just fine. I don't like paying $1 for a lemon, but I'm glad that I can." - On Top Chef:
"The judging is totally honest. When Tom sends home the 'wrong' contestants [the producers] despair in silence."
Like I said, those were some of my favorite bits, but definitely check out the audio (RealAudio only) when you have a chance.

So what do you think of Rachael Ray?
1Oh my God, I laughed out loud at the comment on Ina Garten. I like her recipes, but my mom put it best when she said, "I don't know, she seems kind of creepy". Hee!
Agree with him on the Rachael Ray comment too. She freaks me out and I'm tired of seeing her
face on every single Dunkin Donuts in my neighborhood.
What did he mean by the vegetarian comment? Like, he thinks it's rude because they have to refuse meat? (I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm curious about what he meant).
2LOVE him! I am currently reading Kitchen Confidential... AWESOME read, I recommend it to all!
3In defense of RR, I have never seen her use a triscuit...but I get his point. Love AB, even though he's a vegetarian hater!
4I love him I will have to get his book. I can't wait to go home and listen to the whole interview on line. I used to like RR but now i just feel like she's sold out.
5em1282: I think he means it's rude that vegetarians refuse meat when they travel because a lot of cultures don't "understand" vegetarians. It puts your possible hosts in awkward positions or you're denying sampling their culture, etc.
See, I also have an infatuation with Tony Bourdain. Love his books, love his show. He can be really brash, but he's always really humble. Just the right weird challenge. Also very funny and honest. Thanks for the report.
6Some of his comments, wow.
7I love his "brashness" and honesty. Great answers! So is Sandra Lee good or evil? Good answer.
8Ah, thanks Athena.
I don't know any vegetarians and I definitely come from a "How
can you NOT eat meat?" culture, so I get it
9Love his books, love his show. If you haven't seen him on the Travel Channel, you've got to TiVo it. Makes places that you might not normally be interested in seem really great. Now I probably wouldn't put half of what he puts in his mouth in mine, but I give him credit for doing it. And he's funny as can be.
10See, to me Sandra Lee and Rachel Ray are on an equal pedistal when it comes to creepy. Seriously-I wouldn't want to meet either of them in a dark alley unless I was heavily armed with triscuits, a cocktail and some EVOO.
11TO-tally respect his feelings on most of these subjects; way to show both the strenghts and weaknesses of the celebrity chefs! Except when it comes to Alton...God help you if you insult my Alton...
Woo-hoo Lafayette! That's my home town. I love Anthony Bourdain, I went to his book signing at the ferry building in SF and he was great!
12I love his comment about vegetarianism. It is tough to be a vegetarian and a foodie, particularly a globe trotting one. Great story!
13love love love him! when he was in dc someone did a similar interview with him, and in the "on vegetarians" part he referred to bacon as the "gateway protein"
i know that bacon is pretty much the main reason i could never be a
vegetarian, so that quote only added to my love of all things bourdain
14I think even vegetarians gotta make exceptions. Especially when restaurant options are so limited.
15I love love love love him! Next time he is in town, yum, we will have to invite him to a dive bar!!!
16Hah! He almost seems the type
17michichan make exceptions??
Ummmm no. Why would you do that??
18If you've practiced something your whole life and believe in it, you're not going to make an exception just because say, The Cheesecake Factory has a limited vegetarian friendly menu.
That's a little absurd.
19so hot. in that slightly jerk-tasticly hot way. kitchen confidential made me fall in love.
20Aimee, I've been a vegetarian for 4 years and every so often I think flavour overcomes a perfect track record. Maybe I'm more of a flexitarian though.
21Sounds like you're a life-long veg, Aimee-am I right?
22No I'm not but I have a best frend who is.
23Most people are vegetarian because of their beliefs behind it and hw strongly they feel. I know I am with different aspects of my life.
I just question someone who would call themselves one but then throw it and their beliefs out the window because some restaurant doens't have a vegetarian friendly menu.
24Fair enough. I may not be the most die-hard vegetarian, but any difference you make is something, right?
25There's also always something to be said for health based vegetarianism.
26This is true, to each their own.
27If I was I just couldn't waiver, I would feel like I was giving less than 100% and I don't like to do that.
28I'll be saving the link to his talk to listen to a little bit later one. I totally love Anthony Bourdain! I think it's his "bad boy" aura or something. And it doesn't hurt that I adore his sense of humor too!
29I too love Anthony Bourdain! I just joined this site, and the first thing I noticed was the tact and thoughtfulness of commenters. Thanks for being a cool community.
30I love him!!
31anthony bourdain rocks! he has such a biting sense of humor, love it.
