Has anyone been watching The Gourmet Next Door, Amy Finley's new cooking show? The television series was Amy's prize for winning the Next Food Network Star and debuted on Food Network about six weeks ago. After watching a few episodes, I can't help but wonder why this woman has a cooking show. She's nervous and uncomfortable in the kitchen. She comes across uninformed because she doesn't mention measurements. When she spills ingredients or burns a dish, she ignores her sloppy mistakes.
On the other hand, her recipes are interesting and scrumptious sounding. I may even give her Moroccan chicken stew a try. Still, a successful cooking show is about so much more than good recipes, right? What do you think?

I've never watched it. That being said, I didn't vote for her as the next Food Network star. I thought Rory would have made a better TV chef. I just don't watch TV when her show comes on. (I've never watched 'Simply Delicioso' either!)
Have yet to see it...
I've watched it a few times and she does seem really nervous in the kitchen but I've tried a couple of her recipes and they came out great so I'll probably keep watching it. Even Giada was really nervous in her first series and look at her now...
Both times I've watched, I felt bad for her because of the nerves and fumbling. Maybe over time she'll get more comfortable in front of the camera.
I watched it once over Thanksgiving. She was really boring and I don't think that she will have much of a following.
Haven't seen it but it sounds pretty bad. I'd rather watch Christopher Walken cook.
I was wondering about her the other day. I watched the competition show and thought that Rory should've won as well. Didn't she want to quit halfway into the competition? I'm not surprised that she's nervous and sloppy. She didn't deserve to win. I'm surprised that the Food Network is even airing it.
She's no Guy Fieri!
i've never seen this show but based on the description, she sounds rather endearing and true. i'm rather comfortable in the kitchen and i certainly don't always clean up messes or spills as i go. if i'm not making a cake or cookies, i rarely measure and simply rely on my eye. my dad and i were watcing a cookie show the other night and his comment was 'real cooks don't measure!' this is certainly apparent when trying to follow my nona's old cooking. NOTHING was measured and it always tasted great. i dunno, i'm going to keep my eye out for this show. she sounds real.
I'm surprised that more people don't like the show, at least (too early to say I LOVE it). I think she comes across as down to earth. I agree with Amelie074, if you watch old Everyday Italian, Giada was nervous then...she rarely even smiled and admitted she was nervous. I'm assuming there is a lot involved in these shows and that few cooks/chefs come across as camera ready from the jump, with the exception of Guy-who seems like he was born with a strong, extroverted personality. I'll keep watching and give her time to grow into it before I judge.
Haven't seen it yet, but it sounds okay.
I totally didnt want her to win, she seems so pretentious. I was rooting for the other girl to win, i think it was tory? anyway, i haven't watched this show because of all that.
I love Food Network - watch all the time but I've never seen her show. I like her ideas (during the competition) but not so hot on personality. But like I said I haven't watched yet so I'll not be to judgemental.
i think the problem w/her show is the fact that she starts too many dishes at the same time. she will START a dessert put it aside (w/out completing it) and then start the main dish (again, not completing it)...then go back to the dessert and then start the vinaigrette for a salad. there is no natural flow in show. she comes off as doing TOO much in each segment/act. and it is this reason, i think, she comes off as stiff and unnatural. by the time she has completed the dishes at the end of the show, i've forgotten all the components that went into it. and factcheckincuz, i agree w/you to a degree...there are something that need to be measured out (i.e. if you are brining or baking).
I've never watched the show. Need to find out when it's on.
I don't think that Amy should have won Food Network Star, Rory should've won. But actually neither women should have been the winner, the winner should've been Paul(I think that was his name... he said 'Plummy' during the Iron Chef challenge). He had a great personality and was a wonderful chef. I heard rumors that he was taken off the show because Food Network execs were under pressure to have a woman win the show, since the last two winners were men. Putting two women in the final guarantees that a woman will be the winner, and that is just unfair and unwise. Amy definitely did not deserve to win just because of her gender.
I'm just not a big fan of the food network, or really any of the show hosts.
I honestly think that Paul should have won. Amy is boring, and really just another repeat of Giada DeLahugehead. I really think the food network is going in the wrong direction with all of these "simple" shows. Some people actually want to learn to cook something they haven't made before, not learn simple three step pasta dishes or how to roast a chicken. Sure, there's always Alton Brown, but he makes the same old recipes too, but his shows are more about learning about the ingredients, not so much about actually making a dish.
I'm tired of all of these casserole queens who talk to the viewer like they're stupid and they really need a primer on how to roll a tortilla.
I felt she was all wrong for a show watching the contest show she was in. She was constantly breaking down, crying, whining about wanting to go home, etc. I haven't bothered to watch her show now because I pretty much figured it wouldn't be worth it.
Um, I haven't watched the show @ all. I did however watch the Next Food Network Star and I was pulling for Nikki Shaw. Her final product, as well as her personality would have been a great combination to see. The judges saw something different. Good luck to Amy.
I like the concept of her show but I don't like her at all..there is nothing warm about her..she seems like a cold fish..i know i am being harsh but that is how i've always seen her.
Hmm...I agree that she comes across cold, but it's because of nervousness, it seems like to me.
For some reasons, the camera wasn't too kind on her appearance too, she looks overly plain and just not as attractive as she was on the competition.
And I think I only caught her ONCE on tv, and the other episode was on ON DEMAND. And her recipe actually 'makes' sense. My mom has been making the same dishes she's made (the French one), and I can vouch that it's REALLY good
Maybe she should 'branch' out like Guy Fieri, doing the 'Diner, Dive-in' etc shows, maybe there's hope for her yet...
I have only watched part of one episode. And she seemed all right to me. I really think that she has a TV chef's look, much better than last season's Guy Fieri. Although, he seems pretty comfortable, come on, what is with the hair and big rings? She just needs some time to get comfortable with it.
rory should have won!
I like her recipes, and she's very down to earth. I don't make a point of watching her show, but when I notice it's on I will.
I intentionally don't have cable, so I can't watch the show.
I haven't seen her show but i xan tell you that I just couldn't vote for Rory...she was very stuck up and her smile drove me crazy!!!
I honestly don't like her show... she's awkward and impersonable.
HOWEVER... I didn't like Giada when she was first on... now I like her... So, I'm willing to give her a healthy chance... but she really has to shape up.
I have seen the show, it not that bad I guess. She needs a little more time to get comfortable with the camera. Twinkle I would love to see Christopher Walken do a cooking show. that would be priceless.
I completely watched the Next Food Network Star. ANd I was so happy she won. But... whenever I watch her show, which I TiVo every week, I'm disappointed. I like the recipes, but Amy needs a little something more than she has to fill that show.
I like watching the food network... and I really do not care for her at all. I checked out her show a few times and shut it off half way threw. Rory would have been more entertaining.
I am still undecided. When I watch her its true that she is a bit clumsy and unsure of herself but I think its still too early to judge her. I'll watch a few more.
She won because seriously there was no one else....
I don't watch her show. Her style of cooking does not appeal to me.
she does seem nervous, but i figure she'll warm up to it as she gets more episodes under her belt. i'm glad she won though, since i couldn't STAND rory, and jag obviously shouldn't have won.
I didn't really want her to win, and I'm less than impressed with her show. :-/
i didn't care for her while she was on the 'the next food network star' and in all honesty - i don't care for her now. she's no guy fietti (or however you spell his name) and i think that it would be ok if her show only aired 4 times early on sunday morning.
I sincerely hope they cancel her show and bring in someone more interesting. She is just awful. I have watched almost every different show on the foodnetwork and no one is nearly as horrible as she is. I caught a few of the contest shows and really cannot believe she won. Not only is she a bad cook, but girl needs a serious makeover with personality and looks.
I actually haven't seen it yet!
The show sucks and so does the host. She has no zip and her recipes are pretentious. If I hear her talk about her year in Paris one more time, I'll puke. She should never have won, and for my money the whole thing was a set up.
And to you people that haven't seen the show...don't waste our time voting. Idiots.
