I seriously thought I'd make it out of my 20s without ever having made Jell-O shots. However, sometimes a party calls for a little extra fun.
Last week I was pulled aside and asked if I could make 60 Jell-O shots by the next day. Being YumSugar, I said sure thing, no problem; it wasn't until later that I went into panic mode. Jell-O shots? Seriously? How do I make them? What's the correct ratio? What do I serve them in? After a few minutes on Google, the panic went away, and soon I had several unpredictable flavors and a clever serving tip. So I bought my supplies, spent an hour in the kitchen, and the next day there were Jell-O shots in three flavors: margarita, classic cherry, and spiked tropical punch.
If you've always wanted to try Jell-O shots, get my recipes and tips on how to serve when you read more
First of all, if you can, find cups that are half the size of the ones pictured. Look for something like the little cups you get salsa in at taquerias or ketchup in at some fast food places. Most party supply places will have these in stock. Unfortunately, by the time I was able to get my supplies, none of these places were open. In a pinch Dixie Cups work very well. You may want to spray the insides with a quick coating of Pam or some other oil spray. This is so the shots will come out easily. I didn't like the way it sounded so I skipped that step; however, I think it would have helped.
If you'd rather serve your shots as orange slices, simply omit the cups and pour the Jell-O mixture into cleaned out orange halves. To prepare, slice orange in half horizontally, use a grapefruit spoon to remove the contents, and pour Jell-O mixture in as if it were a bowl. Slice with a sharp knife just prior to serving.

I've had jello shot parties in the past and I've never heard of the orange trick! Definitely trying that out soon.
also, I love the different flavors combos you can get. Chocolate covered cherries or oranges was tastey. and pina colada flavored was always a big hit.
1Oooh, I may have to make them just so I can try the halved orange trick! I love it. Too cute.
2Yum will you make me some?
3nice trick with the orange, it looks great!!!
4We had some margarita flavored ones, among others, at my uncle's 50th bday party. Even my grandmother downed a few!
5while i don't can't stand jello (although i made an exception for some shots in college, and quickly decided the alcohol wasn't worth having to deal with the jello), the orange slice idea is great! taking the shots out of paper dixie cups was always a messy business (the plastic ones worked much better)
6We had jell-o shots at Thanksgiving this year (a la How I Met Your Mother)(and yes, Thanksgiving was all kids - from 23 to 34), and it was the first time since college that I'd had them. I forgot how yummy and fun they were!
7when i was in college...we used the spit cups from my mom's dental office...plastic, the same size as dixie cups, and perfect for this purpose....now i want some jello shots!!
think you could transport them well?? maybe the oranges....i've got a bachelorette party in a few weeks....
8I can't even tell you how much I HATE jello and jello-shots. The thought of them alone makes me want to vomit!! Bad bad BAD college memories!
9Last time we made Jell-o shots we were a little disappointed, but it was still fun we had Orange+Mango Rum, Lime+Coconut Rum, and Lime+Vodka. The Orange Mango was by far the best. The orange thing sounds really cool, and spraying some oil in there is a genius idea, it'll help with the messy factor.
10Wow I've never made jello shots...I dunno how I made it through college without doing so but I did. Can't wait to try these for my next mixer!!
11askmetostay - if you get the condiment cups with the lids, you can easily transport them all. For these, I put them on a cookie sheet that has a lid. The lid barely fit, and then i stacked another cookie sheet covered with foil on top of it. I took a cab that day and they transported fairly well.
12if you can't find anything other than the dixie cups, it helps if you have those little cocktail straws on hand. just use one to loosen up the jell-o from the side of the cup, and voila! it should pop out easily! (and in a pinch you can also use your pinky finger to do the same).
does anyone know if you can make jell-o jiggler shots by cutting them out with a cookie cutter? that could be festive.....
13What a great idea. I love the orange peels. I've got to try it.
Thanks!
14The oranges are brilliant!
15The orange-slice-style jello shots are really great!
16You gals are just like a sorority at sugar publishing.
17I like the orange trick. It looks so pretty served that way. Jello shots get me too goofy though, haha.
18this is the best post.
19an easier (yet less fun) way to go is to make them in a cake pan and spoon them out. hey always works and nothing goes to waste!
mmm
Is that GeekSugar enjoying an orange slice shot?? That manicure looks familiar
20I made many of these in my younger days and found many tasty combinations! Peach schnapps and cranberry jello ... or Peach schnapps and orange jello were my favorite combos! I even made some using Frangelico and raspberry jello. Oh the list is endless!! I found using Schnapps was tastier than Vodka and packed just as good of a punch. The more potent I tried making them with Vodka, the more they tasted like cough syrup ... yuck!
21My mother makes the best jello shots, potent!
22i've had really nasty jello shots before so no thank you! but i do really like that orange peel mold idea
23The orange thing is awesome! I'm totally making those for next summer's ice luge party!
24Jello shot parties are easier in the winter because I can set the trays all over my garage to firm up rather than having to find fridge space.
YS is right about the lids. They sell them at Gordon Food Service and other restaurant supply
places.
25How cool is that orange shot!!?
26I went to a party around Easter that had jello shots inside both halves of those plastic Easter eggs, which was really fun. The orange slice idea looks cool too, and way neater than ripping up dixie cups.
27Mmmm yum! These are so terrific!
28The Orange Slice Idea Is Fantastic! I love it!
29Really Yum, the orange slices are brilliant!
30Was it easy to cut up the orange into the slices once the jello set? I could see myself making a mess trying to cut up the orange.
31These looked really fun, but alas, as a vegetarian, I couldn't partake. But the oranges are super-cute and unusual. Yum, you are so smart.
32Suh-weeeeeet! Oh, college flashbacks are fading in!
33SO Yum.
34The margarita ones tasted so real!
35You can put them in the freezer if you have to make them closer to party time than 5 hours!
36Jello shots are fun. I did a bunch in different flavors but the best was an apple martini shot (done with green apple jello and vodka). A trick to get them out the plastic cups is to dip the bottom of the cup in warm water. It makes the jello melt a little on the outside and they slide right out. I may have to make some for christmas since me and my sister are playing Santa for my niece on christmas eve.
37Looks fun, I have never had a jello shot.
38I love jello shots, they bring back such great memories for me...they brought me and my boyfriend together the first the first time we met. He offered me a jello shot as an icebreaker during a group vacation with people from my old job.
ah booze, is there anything it can't do?
39yummy...
40i just did a big marketing project on jell-o, i thought the fruit halves were adorable.. you can just use them for normal jell-o for kids too, lovesit.
41I've been a vegetarian since well before I was of drinking age, so I've never had a Jello shot. It's the one thing I still sometimes wish I could have, more so than even a McDonald's cheeseburger.
42I love the orange idea!
43Sounds delicious!
44Jell-o anyone?
45I'm glad you posted those great photos. That made it easier for us to make. Thanks
46ooo the orange ones look awesome, i'll have to try that!
47i will definatly make these for my grad party!.. thanks for the idea!!
48I make adult jello jigglers. The vodka thins out the jello, but just a tad of plain gelatin firms it right up. Eating jello with your hands never stops being fun.
49I will defiantly be making these for New Years, and possibly a Christmas party.
