I've seen Grapples β grape-flavored apples β in the store for a few years, and FitSugar actually wrote about them last year, but I'd never actually tried one before. I've kinda been snobby about it and thought they were ridiculous. However, recently, a friend of mine became addicted to them. She swears they're fantastic, so I figured it was time to file away my skepticism and give it a try.
Grapples are created by infusing Washington Extra-Fancy Fuji apples in concentrated grape juice, natural and artificial, but let me tell you it smells awfully artificial β like grape flavoring and water. Old reviews say that it's done by soaking, however the Grapple website now says it's a complex patent-pending process. When you take them out of their plastic packages, you can smell them from a mile away, and it's actually quite distracting. The smell is overly sweet, like wet-grape candy.
So how do they taste? They're actually not bad, but that's mostly because they taste like apples. The grape flavor is there, however it's overly sweet and reminds me of grape candy more than actual Concord grapes. They're also quite pricey for what they are β four apples were around $5. The good part about them is that since they do taste like candy, it felt more like a dessert or a treat, and definitely curbed my need for something sweet in the evening. The best part was that, like other apples, they're only around 80 calories each.
Would I buy them again? Probably not, although I can see where folks might really like them β after all this started because I know someone who is hooked on them. Also, I really am wondering what a baked good made with them would taste like. Grapple pie anyone?

The Body Shop
Am I the only one who finds the wacky modifications of our food scary?
1I wholeheartedly agree about the grape flavoring being more artificial. It tasted like an apple that has been soaked in a grape Huggie (those fake juice drinks). I didn't care for them so much.
2I liked them when I had them in the presliced individual serving packs, it's less than a full apple and not so much at a time. They also serve them with the garlic fries at the ballpark, and it's perfect after all that garlic.
3that sounds interesting. i want to try it!
4It's really weird. The smell of the apple totally fools your mind that you are eating a grape but then you taste it and its just like a regular apple.
5love the name....but it's totally wacky!
6you know, all these hybrid fruit things are making me wonder. if it wasn't on the earth originally - is it supposed to be that way?
7I've seen that at the store but never really thought about them much. Thanks for the feedback. I won't be trying them anytime soon unless someone is giving out free samples.
Grapples... haha. What are they going to think of next? Banapples? Mangapples? Cantalapples? The possibilities are endless!
8We had them once, the kids looked at them funny... I wasn't impressed at all
9I saw these in the store the other day but I didn't know what they were. I LOVE apples but I just don't see the point. It seems so odd.
10Um... you guys do realise that many vegetables come from the same plant? Kale, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli are just some of the veges to come from the same plant. People have been messing around with creating new vegetables for a VERY long time.
11I found these to be tasty, but agree with everyone that it's way too artificial to qualify as a fruit!
12I'd try it, but I agree that it's odd.
13weird
14i think they're pretty good! quite sweet
15ilanac13, you wouldn't want to eat most foods the way they were on earth originally. The wild ancestors of most plants and animals were small and not as tasty. Thousands of years of breeding have made them into what we know and love today.
16it is disgusting...it smells like cough medicine, yuck!
17good..i liked it!
18I love the way they smell...at the grocery store, I always stop to sniff them. But I thought the taste was pretty underwhelming. It tasted slightly grape-y for a few bites, then just like a regular old apple. I wouldn't buy them again, except maybe to try a Grapple pie, as yum suggested...great idea!!!
And I agree that they are very pricey, but last night I was at my regular chain grocery store (not organic or overly priced, generally) and almost all the apples were $2.99/pound!!!
19hmmmmm... I'd love to try these, but I'm allergic to Concord grapes and they'd probably give me hives!
20Just to clarify folks, these aren't genetically modified, the treatment is done after the apples have been picked.
21Why can't we leave good enough alone? It's one thing to breed hybrids - pluots for example, are quite nice, but I draw the line at any sort of artificial processing after harvesting.
22I didn't like these at all!
23I have had these, definitely artificial tasting.
24I'll stick to my organic fruits & veggies!
25sounds naaaaaaasty.
26I've tried these and they aren't good at all. They taste like grapes, but the texture is is horrible.
27I LOVE THESE!!!!!! I ORDER THEM FROM PEAPOD EVERY WEEK!!!!!!
28These are fake hybrids. everyone thinks they're hybrids. Try a real hybrid fruit like a plumcot/pluot: a cross breed between plums and apricots. Incredibly juicy, flavorful, and absolutely nothing artificial. the skin is pretty sour from the apricot genetics but the flesh is AMAZING
