In an attempt to appeal to a younger audience, Bon Appétit magazine is getting a makeover. No, the content of the magazine isn't changing, the cover logo is getting a new look. In her editor's letter, Barbara Fairchild clarifies this by stating:
"Our logo may look a little different, but go ahead and dig in: It's all delicious, relevant, accessible, and fun — in the Bon Appétit style that endures."
Compared with the old logo, the new one is definitely more hip and less stuffy. It's interesting how it went from all capital letters to all lowercase letters, and it's fun how the accent color will change to match each issue. The change is intriguing, yet I wonder: Will a new logo really attract younger readers? What do you think of it?

Why is the "o" a different color? I think it's trying too hard.
1I like the old one WAY more.
2I really do not like to use the word HATE ever... so why don't you change these posts to Like or Dislike because I don't feel so strongly about such things to say I HATE anything
3I guess the new logo is okay, but I still won't buy the magazine. I'm just not a foodie, but for those who are, maybe it'll make a difference.
4NO! NO! NO! Bon Appetit is French, so yes it IS stuffy!!! The old logo gave the magazine a sence of sophisitication. It makes you think that the recipies in the mag will be delicious and beautiful. The new logo is definately "fresh", as the editor put it! I hate it!!!!!!! Hate it! Hate it! Hate it!
5The new one is cute, but the old one is such a classic!!! What if Tiffany's decided that their blue boxes were outdated? No good!
6The new logo is a lot less sophisticated.
7Marseeah I agree.
8It's okay. I love that magazine though.
9i agree nancita, it looks like it's trying to hard. i think a logo change is okay (sunset did a great job when they went back to their old school 1970s one), but this one is just meh.
10It doesn't look as classy...
11I like the change, too bad the content will still be so stuffy...
12I can see it appealing to the younger crowd, but if you're a true food fanatic, you would appreciate the classic look of Bon Appetit no matter what it looks like.
13I WISH THEY WOULD add more recipes and less advertisements
14I'm not a fan of the new logo - I am a foodie and like the "stuffy" air of BON APPETIT. I doubt it will appeal to the younger set - that's just my opinion.
15I got my issue in the mail yesterday, noticed the change, & I like it. :chef:
16I think the whole point of a logo is that it's something a fan of an item can identify without a moment's hesitation. So why change an established logo? I don't get it. It doesn't look better or more appealing. It actually is less bold and looks like someone forgot to use the Shift key for the capital letters.
17First of all, I think 'stuffy' is the wrong way to describe the old logo. The old logo is definitely in a classic old school font. However, I think to keep up with times some logos need a makeover. But the makeover has to be redone for the better not the worse.
The new bon appetite logo does look like it's trying to hard and I don't understand why the 'o' and the accent are green. It's not even logical. The typeface is too heavy. Bon Appetite is a French word so the typeface should definitely be more dainty and light.
18I like it. Change is as good as a holiday. So they say.
19It's not that the old logo was necessarily stuffy, but it definitely never caught my eye. This one would.
201) they are the classic mag. that people turn to for recipies, so why change? 2) how did they choose the random green font and choose to put it on the o and the accent mark?
21unless they are turning in a new direction with this magazine, which would be unfortunate, i don't think change is necessary.
i really really like it. and their new use of the forward slash.
i'm also a big nerd for words, style, and punctuation.
22as a younger person i would have never picked up an issue, but with this new logo i would consider it. They could never keep the old logo, they are trying to appeal to a younger generation to keep up readership, i think it works.
23It would have been possible to update the logo with a fresher typeface that still maintained the sophistication of the old one. Going lower-case and choosing a trendy type means the new logo will probably look very dated within five years. And the typeface they've chosen muddles the brand identity with that of delicious magazine.
The new logo may be more approachable, but it's definitely not distinctive.
24It's not only the outside that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, it is the 'new look' of the photography, styling and layout that leave me unsatisfied with Bon Appetit. My husband and I own a commercial photography studio in the city. We are also major 'foodies'. We understand the need to stay on the cutting edge of both photo technology and style. The new photographic style of bon appetit makes the dinner plate look like it needs to be cleared from the table. The partially eaten and disorderly plates replete with drips of this and that complete with dirty fork resting on the side, are not pleasing to the eye. The photos are often over exposed, and poorly composed... I have subscribed to this magazine since I was a newlywed. At Christmas, I gift 5 others with this magazine. Unless they fire their heinous want-to-be photo journalist photographer and director, this will be my last year for all of us...Bon Appetit, are you listening...?
