You know the drill, but just in case you are new around here: You are at home and hungry for food. You have to cook up something scrumptious for you and your boyfriend/ girlfriend/ spouse/ child/ friend, but the ingredients you have on hand are limited.
You have walnuts, fresh oranges, and sugar. Using these ingredients, along with whatever staples you currently have in your cupboard and refrigerator, what would you make?
To see what I would make, read more
- I have a bunch of arugula that needs to be used up, so I would make a salad. First I would segment the oranges and catch the juice in a large bowl.
- To the bowl I would add salt, pepper, a little grated onion, balsamic vinegar, dry mustard, and the sugar. I would whisk all of this together and slowly stream in olive oil to make a vinaigrette.
- Next I would add the arugula to the bowl and toss with the dressing.
- Finally, I would add the orange segments, the walnuts, and a little bit of blue cheese for a delicious and simple salad.

uhm, a salad as well? maybe with an edge with some grated ginger or something with carrots and some lemon juice as well... I'd skip the sugar since I never eat that anyway
1How about orange flavored candied pecans? First roast the pecans. Cook the sugar down into candy, add some orange juice. Mix the pecans and walla!
2Cookies! There's always flour and butter in my house, so I'd make an orange shortbread cookie with toasted walnuts!
3I'd do cookies as well. I had great luck with an orange-hazelnut butter cookie for my work's holiday sale, I bet the recipe would work great with the walnuts too!
4I'm with XSofie. I'd make a salad— a spinach salad with feta. I'd use juice from the orange with a smidgen of sugar in a red wine vinegar vinaigrette. Gosh, now I'm hungry!
5I would have to make muffins, I love freshly bakes muffins. I would use the zest from the orange, chopped walnuts, rasins, in a sweet muffin batter. So easy and delish.
6A bread with an orange glaze
7I have a recipe for Lemon Walnut bread that's amazing. It'd switch out the lemon for orange, and add a little bit more vanilla because I like the contrast of orange and vanilla together.
8That's sounds so good I might have to try it! Thanks for the stroke of genius Yum!
9Orange-Walnut Torte
1 T butter, softened 1 T lemon juice
½ c dry bread crumbs 1 T brandy
6 egg yolks ¼ tsp salt
10 T sugar 1½ c finely grated walnuts
¼ c grated raw apple 6 egg whites
Grated rind of 1 orange (about 1 c heavy cream, stiffly whipped
2 tablespoons)
-----------------------------
Preheat the oven to 325°. With a pastry brush, butter the bottom and sides of an 8-inch, 3-inch-deep springform cake pan. Toss in ¼ c of the breadcrumbs and tip the pan from side to side to coat it evenly. Rap the pan sharply to dislodge any excess crumbs. With a whisk or rotary or electric beater, beat the egg yolks for about a minute, then slowly pour in 8 T of the sugar. Continue beating until the mixture falls back upon itself in a ribbon when the beater is lifted out of the bowl. Beat in the apple, orange rind, lemon juice, brandy and salt, and with a spatula fold in the remaining bread crumbs and walnuts. In another bowl beat the whites until they froth, then add 2 T of the sugar, continuing to beat until the whites form firm unwavering peaks on the beater when it is lifted out of the bowl. Gently but thoroughly fold the whites into the egg yolk mixture until no streaks of white show. Pour the batter into the springform pan and with the spatula spread the mixture out evenly. Bake the torte in the center of the oven for 30 minutes, or until it has puffed and has begun to come slightly away from the sides of the pan. Turn off the heat and let the cake rest for 15 minutes before removing it from the oven. Remove the sides of the pan and cool the torte on a cake rack. With a spatula, spread the top of the cake with the whipped cream and serve. Makes one 8-inch cake.
10I'd make orange zest and walnut biscotti.
11Candy with walnuts with the sugar since they're best toasted anyways, and add them to a salad with the orange slices. Hopefully there's dried cranberries or cherries as well and some butter lettuce too.
12Squeezing the juice from the oranges into a bowl then combining the walnuts(crushed)with sugar & EVOO. Heat all ingredients on low, stirring often. Bake seasoned chicken party wings and pour the mixture over them. SWEET!
13Orange caramelized walnuts!!!
14Cranberry relish!
Instand cherry jello
2 stalks celery
1 whole orange
1 bag whole fresh cranberries
1 cup chopped nuts
Sweetener (sugar or Splenda)
Make cherry jello with half of the required water. Place in fridge to begin setting. Cut celery and entire orange into 1" cubes and food process until they resemble pickle relish; do not turn them into a paste. Set aside. Process nuts and cranberries until similar consistency. Once jello is 'wiggly' but not completely set, combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Taste and add sweetener until you reach the desired flavor. Return to fridge until set.
Serve along side poultry, eggs, in place of jam on a sandwich, or with a Thanksgiving dinner.
15spinach salad w/ orange slices, walnuts and mint...
16Blend the walnuts, fresh spinach, garlic, olive oil to make pesto sauce to pour over pasta. Eat the orange for dessert and ditch the sugar b/c it's really bad for you!
Or cut the skin off the orange and cut the orange into little pieces. Put the oranges and walnuts over fresh spinach and sprinkle with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper (and ditch the sugar b/c it's really bad for you!)
17I would crush the walnuts in a food processor or perhaps a coffee grinder...then mince the oranges and sprinkle sugar on top of them, and then sprinkle the walnuts on top of that....
18Candied walnuts with an orange flavored simple syrup?
19Oatmeal with freshly chopped walnuts, a sprinkle of sugar on top and a glass of freshly squeezed OJ.
20Carmelize the nuts and add with orange to a salad.
21coat the walnuts in melted sugar and eat the orange separately.
22Orange glazed nuts?
23I am also think glazing the nuts and then making a salad in fact i think now i have to make this for lunch as my mouth is watering at the thought thanks alot guys:)
