I spend a lot of time on YumSugar celebrating all sorts of gourmet indulgences. But it's not often enough that I pay tribute to one of my favorite and most simple foods: the sandwich. These deliciously portable meals come in countless forms, from humble PB&Js to international treats like Vietnamese banh mi. So this year I'm starting a new feature called 'Wich of the Week, where every Wednesday I'll feature a different sandwich I've eaten or prepared at home, complete with photos and instructions on how to recreate it.

I thought I'd start things off with the default turkey sandwich. I make this one when I want a good lunch that requires very little time or thought. It's turkey on multigrain, topped with sliced cucumber and cheese and toasted in the oven; I then toss on some sprouts for a little friction and avocado slices to hold it all together. To get the recipe, read more.
Daily Turkey Delight Sandwich
2 slices multigrain bread
2 tablespoons sweet mustard
2 slices cold-cut turkey
1/4 of an avocado, cut into thin slices
9 thin-cut slices of cucumber
alfalfa sprouts
1 slice of Swiss or mozzarella cheese
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Place bread slices side by side on an oven-safe plate or baking sheet. Spread one tablespoon of sweet mustard (I prefer Trader Joe's Hot & Sweet) on one slice of multigrain bread.
- On the mustard-coated slice, lay the turkey slices, and arrange the sliced cucumber atop the turkey. Top with sliced cheese.
- Pop both slices of bread, with toppings, into the oven for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
- Coat the bare slice of bread with the remaining tablespoon of mustard, followed by the avocado slices. Pile the alfalfa sprouts on top of the melted cheese, and carefully place the avocado-covered slice atop the sprouts.
- Gently press the two slices together, cut in half, and enjoy.

6great idea for a weekly feature Yum!
7This looks good. Will have to try that Trader Joe's mustard.
8This is SO similar to my favorite sandwich!!! The deli that is two minutes away from my house makes pretty much this exact sandwich and I fell in love with it over the summer. Sometimes, I even get it without the turkey and add a few more veggies to it.
Avocado and sprouts are my favorite things to add to a sandwich.
9I will def be checking out this feature every week. We are huge sandwich people, and are always looking for a new way to throw one together. Mmmmm...
10I LOVE this post! Anything with avocado, and I'm in!! Lookin' forward to more sammies!
11OMG I can't believe you just referenced banh mi sandwiches which are insanely cheap and incredibly awesome!!! (Not being partial because I'm Viet..) They're like 3 for $5 around here and way better than Subway!

17That would be really good in a pita bread ... and minus the turkey for me, I'm veggie. But love avocado sprouts and cucumber!
18sounds yum.
19Great feature idea! I'm sick of packing the same ol' sandwiches to work everyday. Unfortunately I can't really toast my sandwiches at the office, but I think I'll a bunch of a turkey, cheese, cucumber, mayo and sprout sandwiches next week (sorry I don't like avacados or mustard!) instead. Thanks for the inspiration!
20This sandwich is so good! i tried it last night!
21how can i save this recipe? or bookmark it or something??
22I WANT TO EAT THAT RIGHT NOW!!!
23Yum!
I think tonight is a sandwich and soup night!
YUMMMM!! This is what I'm talking about YumSugar! Those of us sitting in an office that hate spending a million dollars on fattening lunch need lunch ideas. Great idea!
