This past weekend, my friends and I found ourselves waiting in line for some tasty coffee. When our orders came up, we each had some cutesy latte art — hearts, leaves, etc. — and it got me wondering about latte art in general. Some baristas really take pride in it and there are many clever designs out there. I recently came across this video that walks you through several different designs, including rabbits and stars. The unknown barista is very inspirational; after watching it, I wanted to give it a try myself!

When I was a barista I did this as well. I think people who take pride in their work, no matter what kind of work, find ways to express themselves. You know you have a good barista if they take the extra few seconds to do this on your drink. It also shows that the espresso shots were well pulled with a good head and the milk is the right consistency and temperature.
Also, when you do this all the ingredients get mixed together during the pour so you know you don't have to waste your time or a silly stick stirring your drink; it is already well mixed.
Awww I like the hearts
I would love that! I've never had that done for me before. I would definately revisit any shop that did that time and time again! I agree with Kate that it does show pride in your work.
Nice post! I'm not so crazy about the animal faces but loved the stars! Here in DC the folks at Murky always make a beautiful mark on my cappucino's. Thanks guys!
Those are cute!
So cute!
The owner of the newest coffee shop in our small western PA town is training all of her baristas to create beautiful designs. What a special treat for all of her patrons.

thats adorable.
I'm a barista and I always try to do something fun with my lattes, and it is so great to do something pretty on a latte and have a customer notice it. I have to try some of these things now.
I made a misshapen heart by semi-accident the other day on my home espresso machiene.... and there I was.... feelin' all proud...
i saw something on the food network where there was a barista competition and they had to make designs in their lattes. it's really amazing to see how creative some people are.
Yum, why didn't you include some of your designs?
tko - i haven't actually tried it yet, i'm not a big coffee drinker, but i'll have to give it a shot someday.
