One of my local stores takes a lot of pride in offering fresh, local produce. They also make amazing seasonal Popsicles. Recently I was there and had a satsuma Popsicle with blood orange pieces. My friend thought it was weird, and wondered why they would have a nonseasonal item. That's when I told her that citrus is in season. She was flabbergasted, as were the rest of our friends; none of them realized that citrus is in season during Winter.
Granted, it's pretty easy to find citrus fruits year round, but right now is when they are at their peak. Perfect, because during cold season all the extra vitamin C is nice!
For tips on how to select the best citrus available, read more.
- Hold the fruit to see how heavy it is. The heavier the fruit, the juicier it will be. If it is light, choose again. Light fruit means that the juice has dried up.
- Check for smooth peels. Make sure the skins are firm and not mushy. The thinner the peel, the larger the fruit inside.
- Avoid any mushy spots. It can be squishy (juicy), but it should not be mushy or soft.
- The fruit should smell fragrant and a bit sweet, especially at room temperature. An off smell means an off-putting piece of fruit.

Mmm citrus!
1Ine Europe we would pick limes, lemons, and blood oranges right off peoples trees in the yard!
OK seriously, I've never had a better citrus than a Louisiana Satsuma. I eat them ALL WINTER!!! And crave them for the rest of the year... in fact, I have one sitting right next to me now, perhaps it's snack time.
2Last night, I ate the last of the satsumas that I picked off my father's tree. Those things were so juicy & sweet. I'm craving one right now.
I'm a little disappointed in the oranges I've bought. They have all been sort of dry & not at all sweet this season. I'll try one of the local fruit stands next, instead of a grocery store.
3syako, I don't think I've had one from Louisiana. My father's tree is in FL. If I can't get anymore of his, I'll try to find some from Louisiana.
4i LOVE having oranges in the winter - so i'm glad that they truly could be considered in season
5This was the first year we had lemons grow. We were waiting all summer for them to turn yellow, but they never did. We started to think that maybe we didn't have a hot enough Texas Summer this year. However, we waited, and now they have all turned yellow. Next year, we'll know!
6Love oranges & clementines...
7thanks for the pointers
Mmmmmmm...grapefruit!
8Yummy!
9I had no idea! For some reason I thought Citrus were an autumn fruit....
10Look for Cara Cara oranges, they're not out very long but they're good.
11I love clementines & have been eating them all week! So sweet & juicy.
12Mmmm clementines...
13I had no idea! This might explain why the oranges I bought recently were extra yummy
14Seriously, I have at least one... if not two or three clementines a DAY.
My hubby and I LOVE them! I've heard they're in season until April. Oh, I will be so sad when the leave the markets and grocery stores!
15I discovered Cara Cara oranges a few weeks ago and now I'm absolutely obsessed, I've been eating them like crazy. Ridiculously good.
16La E, that was what I was thinking when I read this. I have been on an Orange kick since the beginning of the month because they have been so great tasting and cheap (5 for $1)!
17I just received a box of Honeybells from a grower in FL. They are a cross between a tangerine and grapefruit and sooooo delicious! I can't wait to get home from work to have another.
18a few weeks ago I had a honey tangerine. It was so good and I can't find anymore. I'm still dreaming about it.
19People don't believe me when I tell them that citrus are winter fruits.
I'm so glad that grapefruits, pomelos, tangelos, and minneolas are in season now!
I just got back from China. Most fruits and vegetables are bought in markets, which means that the things offered are really only the things in season. It's practically all citrus fruits. mmmmm, so yummy!
20Tell your friend just to trust the grocery store--they always put oranges up front in winter, apples in fall, stone fruit in summer....
