This past October, I was lucky enough to find myself in Beijing, eating platefuls of Peking Duck. The Quanjude Roast Duck restaurant was established in 1979 and is one of Beijing's "must try" foods. There are actually several locations, and the one I visited did not let me down. The chefs carve the delicious duck table-side and when it hits your lips, it just melts. The fragrant duck meat is complemented by thin crepe-like pancakes, plum/bean sauce and some sliced cucumbers, jalapenos and lettuce. Our feast lasted quite some time, and I only left the restaurant because we had devoured every last bite, and they were closing. I'm pretty sure someone had to roll me out of the place, I was in such a food-coma bliss, that it's a bit of a blur.
So why am I talking about Peking Duck? Well it turns out that today, Jan. 18 is National Peking Duck Day. I thought you might be interested to hear about it, and then I was wondering, have you ever had Peking Duck?

Such a rich dish. It was delicious. I only had a bite cause my friend was bogarting the entire peking duck.
1I've had it places where it's good and where it's bad. Sometimes it can be way greasy, which I'm not into, but usually it's pretty good.
2I love it! While I was in Beijing I think I had it like six times in five days. Delicious.
3Very much on my list of things to try.
4i had it a really long time ago and don't remember if i liked it or not. now that i'm a vegetarian - it's not likely that i'll have it again.
HAPPY DUCK DAY though!
5I already tryed and I didn't like it that much. It's not one of my favorites chinese dishes.
6Duck in all forms in one of my fav meats.
7Peking style is most yummy though!
I've tried duck before and did not like it at all.
8Duck is awesome!
9It's very difficult to get good Peking duck in the States but San Francisco, NY, and Seattle have some places that serve delicious Peking duck. The skin has to be crispy else it's really just roast duck. OMG I'm hungry.
10My mouth started watering the second I read the title to this post. Yum!!
11I have tried it twice- but different restraunts and I did not care for either. I'd pass on it.
12Who hasn't?
13I love love loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove peking duck!!! love it. but blah, you got me craving it now
14It's very rich.
15When done right, peking duck is SO amazing!!
16my fav recipe for peking duck:
Roast duck until skin is crispy
Carefully carve all skin and fat form the meat
throw out the meat
eat skin and fat.
Obvs just a joke, but gets the idea across...and i love the stuff.
17Arthur...lol. // I love Peking duck. And most people are right, when it's done well...it's delish!
18My family used to get Peking duck for New Year's Eve every year. If the good Chinese restaurant in town didn't require 24 hours notice for the dish, I'd order some tonight!
19I need to sometime. Whenever I eat duck I think "Note to self: this is the best meat ever." But I think that with a lot of other meats too.
20i hate peking duck. it's fatty and it leaves a nasty after taste.
21I've actually never had duck....but I'd like to try it!
22Ick no thanks...
23Yes. I had it in Beijing, and it was so good!

27Love it - but had Peking-style lamb this weekend for a change.
Make it occasionally at home - it's foolproof. Cover duck (or just the legs) in water with a good colouring from soy sauce and the zest and juice from an orange, some cinnamon bark, star anise, couple of cloves and some peppercorns. Bring to boil and simmer for 2 hrs. Leave to cool in the broth. When cold gently remove duck, drain and pat dry. Roast duck for about 1½ hours and the skin will be thin and crispy and it will fall apart for you. Serve with Chinese pancakes spread with a teaspoon of sauce (half and half Hoisin and plum sauce) and matchsticks of cucumber and spring onion.
Yum, yum, yummity yum!
28SUPER DELICIOUS.
