When I say two chocolate cookies with a thick, sweet white layer sandwiched between them, most of you will immediately think of Oreo cookies. However, there's a small percentage of folks who think of the Hydrox cookie instead. The Hydrox — originally produced by Sunshine Biscuits, then Keebler, and finally Kellogg's — debuted in 1908, four years before the Oreo.
Fans like them for several reasons, one being that they stand up better in milk, and the feud is often compared to Pepsi/Coke. Either you're a "Droxie" person or you're an Oreo person. Interestingly, a taste test done in 1988 by Advertising Age showed that 29 tasters voted for Hydrox and 16 voted for Oreo.
Yet despite the devotion of its fans and the taste test win, the Hydrox cookie has gone the way of the dinosaur. For the last several years, Hydrox cookies have been harder to find, and a report from the Wall Street Journal is confirming that the Hydrox cookie is dead. Fans of the product have voiced their opinions, but at this time Kellogg's has no plan on bringing the cookie back. They have, however, confirmed that the Hydrox still lives in "crushed cookie form" as a mix-in for yogurt and ice cream — many fans have noted sightings in several brands such as Edy's/Dreyer's and Carvel.
So tell me, were you a Hydrox fan?

I think Oreo
1Can't say so...
2NEVER heard of it till now.
3The only reason I know about Hydrox cookies is because of Kevin Bacon on Will & Grace, when he thought Will was stalking him but wanted him to stay and hang out..."Come on, we'll split a Shasta, break open a box of Hydrox..." Then they danced the Footloose dance...soooo funny!
4Never had one...but I doubt I'd like them. I don't like oreos either. I don't like the combo of nasty black chocolate cookie (that barely tastes like chocolate and makes your teeth look gross right after eating them) with disgustingly sweet white filling. I didn't even like them as a kid...which is kind of strange because I think most kids like oreos.
5I never really had a preference, I ate more Oreos though, probably b/c I thought (wrongly) that Hydrox were imitation Oreos.
6I adore Double-Stuf Oreos, but as far as flavor goes, Hydroxes were really tasty. It's too bad they never expanded their product. Double-Stuffed Hydroxes would have sold me!
7My mom and dad always called Oreos "Hydrox cookies" so.. I knew of them. For the most part, they were less expensive than Oreos, and since I grew up on the poor end of things, when we got chocolate sandwich cookies, they were Hydrox cookies.
I actually never liked either of them. I much preferred a snickerdoodle or a chocolate chip cookie or just anything homemade.
But during the winter months I love love love the mint oreos. Ah..
8I have never heard of them...so I vote OREO
9Hydrox all the way! They didn't use beef lard
Plus oreos leave that weird film on
the roof of your mouth.
10I always thought Hydrox was a copy of Oreo! Poor Hydrox.
11My parents used to buy these instead of Oreo's when I was little, so I'm sad to see them go.
12tisgirl, I'm sad too. My parents preferred these to Oreos so I grew up eating Hydrox cookies.
13I've actually never had one of these.
14I've never heard of Hydrox cookies, so I can't say that I'll miss them!
15I'm showing my age again. I know Hydrox and Oreos hate them both. They are the worst cookie on the planet to me. Glad to see them go.
16Aww I haven't had a Hydrox in ages. And now I'll never get to again
17There are 6 kids in my family. When we were growing up, my mother would buy 2 boxes of cookies a week, one of her choice and one of our choice, each of us getting a turn. 3 loved Oreos and 3 loved Hydrox. It was this HUGE constant debate in our house over which was better.
18Marynanabananas, I agree with you! I was never an Oreo fan, either. I don't even like chocolate. But I remember seeing the Hydrox cookies before. I thought they were a generic, store-brand Oreo cookie.
19I never knew about them til now... too bad, woulda loved it ten years ago haha
20I always thought Hydrox were a ripoff of Oreos too! I prefer Oreos, though. Hydrox never tasted the same to me....and I ate Oreos first! So I'm not sad to see them go since I have never purchased any!
21I always thought the chocolate flavor of Oreos was better than Hydras, but really, I would NEVER pass up ANY chocolate cookie!
22*Hydrox
23I always thought Hydrox was a hideous name for a food item. it sounds like a cleaning product.
24Poor Hydrox!
I haven't had them in more than 20 years, but it's still a little sad to see them go. Even though I probably wouldn't like them now - I hate Oreos. But I remember eating them at my preschool when I was little and being a fan then.
25I always liked Oreo better
26Hydrox were great, and vegetarian-friendly, unlike Oreos.
27Hydrox is to Oreo as Vienna Finger is to Cameo. Sunshine products were so much better than Nabisco.
