The folks at Lotus Foods recently sent a few samples of their exotic rice. The company specializes in handcrafted rice from small family farms in remote areas of the world, and it has marketed several heirloom rice varieties that may otherwise have become extinct. It also works closely with the small family farms in order to provide them with an "honorable living." It's an interesting concept, and I must admit, the bags of green, red, and black rice have often caught my eye at the grocery store. Yet looks and mission are one thing; what I wanted to know is how it tasted. To find out if it's worth more than $4 for a pound of rice, read more.
The first rice I tasted was the Jade Pearl Rice. The Jade Pearl was like a regular medium-grain rice, but with a slight green tint and subtle bamboo flavor. The website claims a "light vanilla taste," but I didn't experience that at all.
The second rice I tasted was the intriguingly black Organic Forbidden Rice. It cooked up quickly and surprised me with its nutty taste. The texture was a little bit nuttier than regular rice; it reminded me of short-grain brown rice. The color was fantastic and looked great with my dinner. However, the cooking process was a bit messy. When I took the lid off of the pot, the condensation dripped down and I noticed my white stove was splattered with purple dots.
So, given that the price is quite steep — 11.25 pounds of the Organic Forbidden Rice sells for $49.08, while 10 pounds of standard Calrose rice can be found for $10.18 — would I buy it again? The answer is yes, but I probably wouldn't make it my everyday rice. As much as I liked the flavor and the company mission, I just didn't find it economically sensible. However, I would definitely pick up some for a dinner party or as a treat to myself. Either way, it's worth trying, and if it becomes an expensive habit of yours, don't say I didn't warn you first!

Pretty interesting. So you can find this at most grocery stores, or just specialty stores? Since you said they've often caught your eye, I don't recall ever seeing this type of rice around at my grocery store, but I will definitely be on the lookout.
1Hmmm can't say I ever heard of it...
2I liked the nutty flavor, and I buy it when I'm looking for something different. It's very tasty and pretty.
3Serendipitous - I could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure I have seen it at both Safeway and Whole Foods. But then I'm a dork who wanders the aisles of grocery stores looking for things I've never seen before
4Forbidden Rice sounds like something you could make for a valentine's day dinner.
5I've tried the Forbidden Rice, the Bhutanese Red Rice and the Kalijira Rice (white). I love them all. I think they each have a distinct flavor and can really jazz up a boring old rice dish. I have found them both at Albertson's and Whole Foods, I think they also have them at Wild Oats.
6My hubby is the starch monster in our house, but I haven't seen this Forbidden Rice and I'd love to. YumSugar, try a rice cooker - it's the easiest way to cook any kind of rice. I've used the same one for 25 years and never produced a bad batch of rice.
7I hope the family farmers are getting a fare price for that expensive rice.
8I'd like to try this, I love rice.
9AmberHoney - I grew up using a rice cooker (there was always hot rice at our house). I used to have one, but I have very little counterspace and usually have at least one burner open. So a few years ago I switched over to a heavy bottomed pan and it works out perfectly - once i got the timing down right. the forbidden rice was the first time I've ever had a mess.
I keep thinking I'll get a rice cooker again — my mom keeps trying to force on me — but I don't know where i would put it. There's no space for it to live on the counter, and no cupboard to put it in when it's not in use. Ah, such is the sacrifice for a citylife!
10I've had forbidden and also Bhutanese red. Both are very good, but can you justify rice that costs more per pound than steak?
11Yumsugar - whatever you do, don't get the Panasonic one-cup mini rice cooker - it overboils and undercooks rice!!!
12YumSugar, you should check out this rice cooker on Amazon. It has settings for different types of rice and I think it makes the best rice! Plus, look how cute the rice cooker is. Yeah, it is a bit expensive, but definitely well worth it, it'll even do brown rice.
You can set it to turn on at certain times like when have it cooking when you come home from work or something. Maybe you should check this out as your next possible rice cooker if you go back I mean. Plus, if this one is too big for you, there's a smaller one as well.

13I have a simple microwave rice cooker that makes perfect rice every time - I can add spices, broth, veggies if I want. I don't remember the last time I cooked rice conventionally, unless it was risotto.
I think it was under $10 at Tuesday Morning, and it was one of those "pick up on a whim" things. Best "whim" I ever had!
14ummm I know someone who went to Haiti and they have this rice there... however, they just use a seasoning to make it black and use plain white rice.. I am not sure if u find that seasoning here... jon jon or something its called!
15I buy black rice in Dallas area Asian markets. (Kudos to Vietnam Plaza Mkt on Beltline and Josey) It runs around $1.50/lb
