The other day my girlfriends, Maite, Luisa, and I were chatting about, yep you guessed it, cooking! I was saying how much I love cooking with garlic but I hate the stench it leaves on my hands for the rest of the night. They told me an old wives secret and I tried it out and it worked. So here's the deal: once you have finished chopping your garlic, gently take the knife in your hands. Under a stream of cold water hold the knife in with your fingers pressed against the metal for about thirty seconds. So I went home and did a little bit of research. Turns out that you can do the same thing with stainless steel sink faucets, spoons or a Stainless Steel Bar of Soap. I'm not sure what occurs scientifically (please write me if you know), but the steel and cool water neutralize the odors (it should work for fish and onions or any other pungent smell, too!). I can't believe I didn't know about this trick before.
DearSugar also has a list of ways to combat the smell of garlic.

I once read that if you chew gum while chopping onions you won't cry. I've never tried it though. I can imagine it still burns your eyes like crazy.
1We have something in the kitchen to get food odours off your hands. It's an oval-shaped piece of metal, and you have to rub it in your hands like you would do with a piece of soap. It works perfectly, and it seems a lot safer than using a knife! (especially if you're clumsy like me!)
2for NYE dinner I made a huge piece of pork and my hands smelled of garlic and seasoning for 2 days after that
3so how about no-tears onion peeling? any ideas? My flatmate and I were discussing this yesterday as we were preparing onion soup. His solution was wearing goggles... There must be something a little bit more stylish to solve this?
4There is: contacts! And since even Dior sells them, in gold with sparkles, you should be able to peal your onions in style
5I have one of those stainless steel soap things but the sides of the stainless steel sink work just as well.
As for chopping onion, try chopping them next to a lit candle. It does help.
6If I had only seen this earlier tonight!
