British retail giant Marks & Spencer has just launched a pink port intended to appeal to women. The wine, which is unimaginatively called Pink Port, is lighter in hue than regular port because it takes a small amount of color from the grape skins. They've decided to test this product out because many folks associate port as a man's drink — much like they wrongly assume whiskey and bourbon are for men only.
I'll admit, I'm drawn to things by their packaging, so I'm sure this would have grabbed my interest. However, unfortunately, according to Guy Woodward, editor of Decanter magazine, the wine's not worth it. He believes it was more like vodka cranberry than port and said:
I suspect they're trying to jump on the rosé bandwagon, but it tastes worryingly close to the alcopop market.
It's a bummer to hear that port marketed towards women is inferior to regular port. Do they think we won't notice if it's bad? What do you guys think? Do you think we even need our own port?

i dont, because i LOVE port. actually...all the girls i know do lol. and...most guys i know dont. but port+chocolate is a to die for combo! i will just stick with my regular port ^__^
1I second indreams8318 comment because it was EXACTLY what I was going say!
2Yes! port and chocolate is the best. I also happen to love whiskey and other 'guy' drinks.
3I agree with the rest. Why do women need their "own" port? Especially if it's not good? Port is great as is, thanks.
4Hmmm...
5First of all...it really irks me when things marked towards women are pink. Many times it actually steers me away from the product.
Secondly, being a port connoisseur...why on earth would I want an inferior port, simply because I'm a woman?
And a word of advice..ladies if you do a tasting...drink the port by itself first. A lot of places will serve chocolate in order to mask the taste of a crappy port
6Sorry, marketed!
7Sure, why not? I like novelty wines, etc.
8The last time I drank port, I spent the night dancing on my friend's sofa. I might wait a little while before drinking some again..
And I'd rather drink a good port than something pink. I'm also with Smo, whisky is good.
Sorry in advance for being annoying, but I noticed the "England" tag. M&S also have stores everywhere in Scotland..
9I don't like port, but I'd try it.
10I do buy things based on if the packaging is cute a lot of times, and pink is my fave color, but I also know good port when I taste it and guess what men...I am a whiskey drinker too!
11alright, cool
