While there are kitchen gadgets that are totally helpful and necessary — the food processor, a mixer — sometimes it seems like there are more random kitchen gadgets than essential ones. There are so many useless tools that we have an entire feature devoted to them. Not to mention the Yum Market on TeamSugar is jam-packed with kitchen contraptions.
For example, look at this peanut butter and jelly spreader. This handy, double-sided gadget —bookmarked by amh678 — smoothly scoops and spreads peanut butter and jelly. Sure it's fun, but isn't it just a glorified butter knife? What do you guys think of these random kitchen gadgets? Useful or useless?

Honestly, some of this stuff can be pretty useful!
1I don't think i would go out of my way to buy any of these gadgets, but if I got them as a present or something I would probably use them!
Having washed every one, they are only good if you have a 10,000 sq. foot kitchen with plenty of storage space.
2The only one of those that I've used is the apple peeler/corer/slicer (my mom has one). It's pretty great for making apple pie (which I don't do). I wonder if I would make apple pie if I had one of those things, though; my reluctances comes purely from the work of peeling/coring/slicing.
The rest? No thanks. My kitchen is cramped as it is.
3Seems a little silly to me, but then, I'm running out of room in my kitchen as it is, and I only have the useful stuff. I think if my kitchen was bigger some of the stuff might be fun to have.
4I think it's fun stuff to get, but I would never buy them for myself. I have a hot dog cooker that my mom got me before my first Oscar party. (I was doing concession stand treats.) It rolls the hot dogs and people actually still gather around to watch them. It isn't useful when I making a few, but it is great for larger get togethers. I will use it this weekend actually.
5However, I don't get the peanut butter and jelly spreader. My knife is just fine.
I really like the PBJ spreader because I hate mixing things. I can see the usefulness. I don't know if I would buy one (unless it was reasonably priced) but if I had it I would find a lot of uses for it.
The others are a little less useful to me.
6I don't think the PBJ speader is useful... PB and J are both messy and it looks like it would get to sticky... I would much rather whip my knife off before using it in the other make a big mess using the other side of a spreader.
7my parents used to have one of those apple peeling thingies.... but we would just keep it going after the peel and eat the apples is thin swirls... i miss that thing... but i wouldnt actually use it productively
8Most are useless. I could see a few being useful if you used them a lot, like the apple peeler.
9I think things like this work for instance say; you're friend is obsessed with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or you have an inside joke with someone about hot dogs- kinda like a funny gag gift. Otherwise.... pretty useless!
10I'd love to have one of those pizzelle cookie maker thingamabobs...I don't think you could really make them without one. I'd LOVE to make my own.
11I like the pb&j spreader! I wouldn't turn down a Dualit Toaster with the Sandwich Cage as a gift.
12I actually owned the apple peeler until it got lost in a move. It was also good at peeling potatoes. The rest are a waste of valuable storage space.
13The apple peeler is fun to use when you're doing a baking project with kids, they get a kick out of it.
14i don't think i'd go out of my way to buy any of those, but i wouldn't turn them down if they were a gift. the only semi-useless kitchen gadget i'm dying for is one of those 4 in 1 panini press/waffle maker type thing
15I sort of like weird stuff like this.
16I like most of these!
17i don't know if there's really a need for that thing - it's cute though. i think that i would need something that digs the odds and ends out of the jar more than a spreader
18What an awesome idea! Now you won't get jelly in the peanut butter jar!!!
19I actually need an apple peeler- I bake a lot, and apples are a favorite, but they're a hassle to peel by hand.
20The PB&J spreader is cute (instead of wasting two knives, over getting jelly in the peanut butter jar)...BUT i find that back at home i'll go through drawers and find little applicances and tools for which we have no idea what the original purpose was. We used to have a little hard-boiled egg slicer that i would sometimes pretend was a harp.
21Hahahaha. I burst out laughing when I saw that Peanut Butter and Jelly spreader. My roommate's dad sent one to us a little while back. It's so useless, but we got a laugh out of it. I've used it in place of a butter knife, but never actually for peanut butter and jelly.
22Haha I work for stonewall kitchen! I honestly have never even heard of this so people must not order it from us a lot. That it definitely makes it seems like it's a waste. The price is great though so it might be worth a shot.
23Would LOVE this one!! I'm forever dipping jelly in peanut butter or vice versa, or dirtying two knives which is just a pain.
24Oh and rockwilder! Egg slicers are good for slicing strawberries and olives too : ) . Multi-tasking!
25cool stuff
26absolutely useful! i always have to dirty two knives when i make peanut butter and jelly.
27I like specialty items like that. If it's something for a specific purpose--especially in the kitchen--I'll probably buy it. If it's something that doesn't work as well as something else, or something I'd have to wash a lot, then no.
28I am not a fan of gadgets. I follow my grandfathers philosophy (also a chef) that if it only accomplishes one or two tasks it is a gadget and there is always a tool to use instead. I can't live without a good chefs knife, spatula, pair of tongs and a whisk! And regarding PB&J, am I the only one who wants a knife for the peanut butter and a spoon for the jelly?
29I saw the PB&J spreader @ the Safeway store in Casper, but couldn't fit it into the budget, as I was buying some knives there. Later I was looking for it everywhere.
I found a spreader yesterday at Kitchen Collection, but it only had one spreader end, (by design). My engineer friend watched as I checked out an apple slicer that could core an apple and slice it in half or in quatters by sliding a button to change the blade configuration. He said, "I believe that is way over engineered." Then he saw the apple peeler, and held the box up and said, "Wow, now THIS is way over engineered!" I kind of agreed.
Later realizing that not all kitchens are the same, the peeler could be an attention getter for someone who bakes pies or makes cider at a Fair or Swap meet. It might advertise the next big breakthrough in candied or carmel apples. Candied apples without that nasty apple skin, jalapeno flavored, of course... Now we talkin'! Go Peeler! Go Peeler! Go Peeler!
