What Do You Know About America's Food Systems?

It's Eco Month on YumSugar and with the recent spotlight on "pink slime" and this past week's new case of mad cow disease in America, I've been giving a lot of thought to the way America's food systems operate. After rewatching the Oscar-nominated documentary Food, Inc., which brought to light even more harsh realities about our country's food production and consumption, I thought I'd put together a quiz on some of the statistics I learned while viewing the film. What do you know about commercial food production and consumption in America today? Get started below to find out.

these days i gag when i go to Safeway and i only buy at liter and toilet paper there......

It's a little misleading to say that peanut butter "contains" corn, or even to list peanut butter as a "corn product". Maybe you could say a corn product is used to make peanut butter if you only mean the brands that use dextrose as a sweetener. However, there are commercial brands that are not sweetened.

I loved this documentary. I hope it helps shed some light on the corrupt food companies. I got so mad watching the part when a food rep was explaining why they should not have to add the fact that something was from a cloned animal..."because it will cause unnecessary fear in Americans". It makes us (the consumers) sound so stupid! I think we all the right to know and choose if we are willing to eat something that was cloned, grown in another state/country, with antibiotics, organic or not, free range or not... If not on the labels (they might run out of room to write all the disgusting this they do to their food at some point) they should have this information online. And obviously...the documentary shows that animals need to be protected. P.S. never eat chicken wings please :)

I want people to be able to eat meat that is treated humanly and with out growth humanly and antibiotics.

My only problem with Foer's Eating Animals was that it was very absolutist, making Foer appear self-righteous at times. I suggest reading The Omnivore's Dilemma prior to Eating Animals. I personally believe it's more well-rounded and will help ease you into Foer's vegetarian/vegan tirade.

factory Farming is a Big problem in the US. This is why so many people are sick and diseased because the meat, chicken and fish people eat are poisoned. We must fight back and support the slow food movement. Food Inc is a great documentary to watch and also eating animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.
