Let's Dish: What's Your Favorite Apple and Why?

One of my favorite discoveries at this year's Food Fête was the Lady Alice, a Washington-bred apple variety that's recently entered the mass market. Like a Pink Lady, the Lady Alice was painted with a mix of red, yellow, and green, but had an even deeper blush color. One bite revealed that it's both tart and intensely sweet, with a startling juicy crispness. I was told they'd hit Safeway stores in a few months. Until then, I'll just have to dream about my new favorite apple! What's your preferred variety and why?

I just tried an pinata apple, if you find one buy it! Super delicious! Still looking for the sweetangoes! Must keep looking!

I like Brae burn apples. I can't stand really sour apples and the Delicious kind is way too mushy. Gala apples are good, too.

Honey crisps are the absolute best...like someone said earlier, I thought I wasn't a big fan of apples...then someone told me about honey crisps. Now, I eat one a day. We still have them up here at Wegman's.

I love Gravenstein apples! They're grown in a town called Sebastopol about 20 minutes from me. They have a great apple fair every year with all kinds of gravenstein goodies!

Fujis and pink ladies are my favorite. Red delicious apples are ironic most of the time.

Jazz and Pink Lady are my favorites but I was raised on Empires and can't not give them a shout out!

Honey Crisp. I can find awesome ones at Whole Foods. Good ones at Target and OK ones at Publix. I have two in my refrigerator that I can't wait to devour!

Ambrosias are great, this is the first year I've had them. Just tart enough but crisp and sweet. Then Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp.

Ambrosia apples are the best but also a short season and expensive. I will have to look for Honeycrisps, never heard of them before.

Honeycrisp apples are the absolute best!! Everybody I force to try one becomes instantly hooked. However, it seems like their season is shorter than other varieties of apples; they seem to only be available for a short period every year.
Golden delicious. They aren't as fancy as some varieties, but nothing compares to a good ol' golden delicious.

Lauren- The SweeTangos rock! They were developed in Minnesota (like the Honeycrisp!), and had their first season in the metro area this past fall. People went batshit crazy over them, and the markets couldn't keep them stocked. Unfortunately for SweeTangos, the brief season is over. *sobbing while anticipating the arrival of September 2010*

Yum, I will pick you up one at Berkeley bowl this weekend! They are the best, my husband's great aunt told me about them in early in the apple season and every since I have been HOOKED! fuzzles, I will have to try the Sweetango one, I have never had it!
