The USDA has declared this week, August 7th through 13th, National Farmers Market Week. According to the USDA, more than 1,000 farmers markets have opened in the past year — up 17 percent from 2010. There's good reason to get behind them and the whole farm-to-table experience: they're sustainable, community-driven, and personal. But perhaps most importantly, they're fun!

The Peachtree Road Farmers Market in Atlanta is incredible! Each week they have gorgeous produce, local cheeses and meats (including the world's best bacon and, if you're more of a health nut, Greek-style yogurt), honey and jams. They also have great vendors selling tasty treats like soups, lobster rolls, pastries, and even pizza from a portable pizza oven! There's something for everyone, plus chef demos and events like an upcoming ice cream social benefiting Slow Food Atlanta. Have your veggies and ice cream, too, I say :)

I love going to these. I'd rather buy from them sometimes than the regular supermarket. Most of them have waaay better prices too.

that's funny spectra...i've probably bought syrup from them before! i always get it at the farmers market, so there's a good chance i stopped by their booth at least once :) soooo good!

Only one mentions free range or organic. Eating local produce is great but not if it is loaded with chemicals. Eating local meat is great if the animal has been raised free range/organic and if it had a humane death.

snarkypants---I was thinking the same thing! I love the Madison Farmer's Market! My husband's aunt and uncle make and sell their own maple syrup there every week until they sell out. I wish I got down there to see it more often. For some reason, the Oshkosh Farmer's Market doesn't quite cut it most of the time.

They all look pretty fun and with some much yummy food. But living in the South Bay we must deal with our own little jewels :) Downtown Sunnyvale, San Jose and Campbell all have good markets, though not as big as the metro cities. Small, quaint, good food and most importantly, within walking distance. That's all we need. One of these days I'll brave the Ferry Plaza.

the dane county farmers market in madison, wisconsin is the largest producers’ market in the country, can't believe you missed that one!

The North Market in Columbus, OH is awesome. Lots of stalls selling cheeses, meats, wines, veggies, fruits, etc. Lots of food stalls selling ready cooked meals from all over the globe.

I love the farmers' markets in Philadelphia,PA. Great chesses and baked goods!!! Reading Terminal, Italian Market, Cliveden, the list goes on. There are co-ops like Weaver's Way too.
