March Must Haves For Food Lovers

Thanks to the Super Bowl, Valentine's Day, and award season, we're into March already, and the first quarter of the year's nearing an end. That doesn't mean the fun's over, though: from a new twist on Easter candy to an important new documentary, we've got plenty to look forward to. Take a look at 10 things we're excited for this month.

Enchanted Toadstools

Even if the Easter bunny doesn't pay you a visit, you should treat yourself to these unusual Vosges Enchanted Toadstools [1] ($14). Leave it to Vosges [2] to combine two unlikely ingredients: chocolate and Reishi mushrooms. Mixed with dark chocolate praline and a white chocolate shell, I'd be happy to eat a box of these instead of a hollow chocolate Easter bunny.

Rachel's Irish Family Food by Rachel Allen

Ireland's bestselling cookbook author Rachel Allen — dubbed the "Irish cooking queen" by the BBC — has a cookbook out just in time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Rachel's Irish Family Food [3] ($30) is chock-full of recipes that are at once homey and exotic. I can't wait to try her recipe for bacon and cabbage with parsley sauce, or a Dublin favorite, coddle.

Potoffee Chips

I have a soft spot for salty sweets, so I was only slightly shocked to find myself polishing off a bag of shatteringly crisp toffee-coated potato chips from Potoffee Chips [4] ($7) at Andrew Zimmern's Trucks on Midtown's Tracks event [5], despite already stuffing myself silly on the other 20 trucks' offerings. Thankfully, they won't be a mere fleeting memory as I've since elatedly discovered that they're available online as well as from their South Florida-based truck.

St. Patrick's Day Mini Vanilla Iced Cookies

My favorite part of any holiday are seasonal cutout cookies, and these St. Patty's Day cookies [8] ($23) with royal icing make me leap with joy. The package includes shamrocks, leprechaun hats, gold coins, Irish flags, and festive lips ("Kiss me; I'm Irish!").

Poor Man's Feast

To say I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Elissa Altman's Poor Man's Feast: A Love Story of Comfort, Desire, and the Art of Simple Cooking [9]
($28), a memoir from the author of the eponymous James Beard Award-winning blog, is a gross understatement. When we walked by the Chronicle Books booth at the Fancy Food Show [10], I snuck a quick peek, audibly squealed in excitement, and had to essentially be torn away from the copy in my hands. Let's just say I know what will be on my bedside table come March 5 . . .

Asparagus

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a creature of habit. Still, my obsession with a certain miso-butter-slathered and poached-egg-topped asparagus dish is unprecedented — I've made it at least once a week the past year, subbing out steamed kale for roasted asparagus the past nine months or so. Kale may be a fine substitute, but I'm still ridiculously excited for the return of these grassy stalks [11] to the farmers market, as they truly make the dish. Stay tuned for the recipe!

I'm a huge Game of Thrones [13] fan, so I've spent a considerable amount of time mulling over what I'll cook up to fete the upcoming season three premiere on March 31. Top of my list is a feast-worthy spit-roasted whole suckling pig [14] (inquire for price). I'm not yet sure if it'll come to fruition, but here's to hoping! To round out the epic meal, I'll likely consult A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook [15]
($35), the expertly researched cookbook written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Sariann Lehrer.

The Chefs Collaborative Cookbook

Any book with a cover featuring borage [16], pancetta, and sunkissed apples is bound to be a good one. The Chefs Collaborative Cookbook: Local, Sustainable, Delicious: Recipes from America's Great Chefs [17] ($40) features recipes from over 100 American chefs (including Alice Waters [18] and Rick Bayless) who pride themselves on cooking with whole, local, and sustainable ingredients.
