Delicious Reasons to Ring In November

Nov 1 2013 - 12:20pm

We're already counting down the days until Thanksgiving, and we have the perfect wine to drink while we're waiting. In the chilly month of November, we're celebrating Día de los Muertos, Beaujolais Nouveau, Hanukkah, and Thanksgiving, and to all you Hunger Games fans, the Quarter Quell is upon us.

Pan de Muerto

When it comes to Mexican holidays, Cinco de Mayo gets all the love, but I'd argue that Día de los Muertos [1] — Day of the Dead, which follows Halloween [2] — is just as worth celebrating. In Mexico, you'll see sugar skulls everywhere, but it's pan de muerto (airy, yeasty bread that's topped with granulated sugar for a little extra sweetness) that gets me every time. Get it at any Mexican grocery store or bakery across the country today, or take a stab at making it yourself [3]. It's perfect after dinner with a cup of coffee.

Giada's Feel Good Food: My Healthy Recipes and Secrets

Many critics of Italian TV personality Giada De Laurentiis have wondered how she can eat her recipes and stay so petite. Inside Giada's trailer [6], she shares that almond butter on brown rice bread is her comfort food. Come on! Her latest book, Giada's Feel Good Food [7] ($33), which comes out Nov. 5, will probably be in the same vein as Gwyneth Paltrow [8]'s It's All Good, as most of the recipes are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan. Like many American women fascinated by Giada's eternal youth, I can't wait to follow in her healthy footsteps.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day

There's a day to honor pretty much every type of food or drink out there, but Beaujolais Nouveau Day [9] (Nov. 21) stands out from the bunch, as it's when the new harvest of young wine is released. We think it's very much worth toasting to.

Williams-Sonoma Smart Thermometer

A probe thermometer is one of the most accurate and versatile thermometers on the market, but the Williams-Sonoma Smart Thermometer [10] ($200) goes a step further and syncs the thermometer to any of your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch) via WiFi. The app tracks the internal temperatures of your meat and clocks in the cooking time — no more math or constantly hovering around the oven. In addition, the app lets you set up other alarms to simultaneously cook dressings, casseroles, or rolls. Hurray for multitasking without burning!
