Chalkcloth Runner: Love It or Hate It?

When I first saw this chalkcloth runner ($24-38) in the latest NapaStyle catalog, I immediately wanted one. I made the mistake of thinking it was actual chalkboard and was disappointed when, upon further examination, I realized it was just cloth. Still, it's perfect for a cheese display or chili cook-off and would make a great gift for the hostess who has everything. What do you think?

I don't like the idea of chalk dust flying around. If it's a markercloth, that might end up on my kitchen table.

hmm.. i like the idea, but what if you have a big party with lots of food from many different people? I don't really care about tackiness so I'd probably just use a white board with a list of names and dishes displayed or just make placecards ahead of time and stick em infront of the dish.

i could see this being cooler at younger folks' parties, but semi-tacky at older peoples' parties. it's a great idea, but doesn't have a classy flavor.

clever! Especially for unidentifiable dishes, like quiche. You never know what's up in that mixture.

It's a good concept but like other people have said what about if it rubs off

i think that it's a good concept and that it allows for a bit more interaction if you have a full spread at your house during the holidays.

Cool idea but something I'd want to see in person before purchasing as I also think it looks a little cheap.

I think the chalk cloth looks tacky. I prefer the runner in the back. Much more classic & pretty.

I agree that it would be better as an actual chalkboard, but I love the concept and it looks nice on the table. It would be great for holiday entertaining!

its okay.....but is it gonna rub off when people rub against it? or set their plates on it? then it will look like a big mess i think

Just as important is someone with good handwriting. I used to teach, and discovered that many people find chalk surprisingly hard to write with.

Kinda neat for the Holiday's when you've got a large food spread that belongs to different people. Now you don't have to point out who made what item and exactly what it is, if the guest can't tell.
