Yesterday competitive eaters Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi met for a highly anticipated rematch at the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship in Chattanooga, TN. The dynamic duo last faced off at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition. Chestnut slammed Kobayashi with his quick consumption of 93 hamburgers in eight minutes. Rising star Patrick Bertoletti out ate Kobayashi by one burger and came in at second place. According to Richard Shea, the president of Major League Eating, the event was a momentous one:
There are precious few moments in professional sports when you can watch as a competitor affirms his place in the history books. With this win today, Joey Chestnut just said to the world: I am Krystal King hear me growl.
Chestnut was awarded $20,000 for winning. Although the sport of competitive eating continues to gain momentum and popularity, I remain grossed out. How about you? Have you warmed to over-eating as a competition? How many burgers could you stomach in eight minutes?

Single Dress
USA! USA! USA!
193 hamburgers in eight minutes? That's insanity. And what's even crazier... not a single hamburger had cheese on it.
2I'd just like to say that Kobayashi did defeat Chestnut in a curry eatoff a few months ago.... of course I think that took place in China, which is probably why it wasn't mentioned here... KOBAYASHI! I still luv ya!
3gross. Krystal is disgusting. Although, I will say Krystal hamburgers are the tiny little square ones. Not regular fast food burgers. Still gross to eat 93 of them. I couldn't eat 93 of them in a lifetime. I won't even eat one in a lifetime.
4Haha! Look at the picture- Koby is giving Chestnut the stink eye!
5Professional sport? Competitive eaters? Rising star? Major League Eating? $20,000 prize? Are you kidding me? This event sums up everything that is wrong in the U.S.! We celebrate people who can shover burgers in their mouth in a short period of time and slap a "champion" title on them. How many starving people could that $20,000 and 93 hamburgers feed? Hate to rant, but this is totally ridiculous!
6Oh please with the "people are starving" bit, I applaud the Competitive eaters and the sponsers for keeping up american moral, and for having fun, and for representing what america is which ISNT a nation of Mopey people who are dismal and negative about everything so they want to take away what pleasures we have. If people want to watch this, and compete, then I am all for it!
If you really gave a crud about starving people, get off the computer and sell it, and go feed them with the money.
7Whoah, whoah, whoah there CaterpillarGirl! No need to get nasty. I made a comment on this story because the people who are involved in this "sport" take themselves way too seriously. Go to the offcial Krystal Square Off website to see what I mean. I got a giggle out of it and clearly my sarcasm isn't heard in my "voice" in this comment.
I do happen to think the whole idea of "competitive eating" is ludicrous. That doesn't make me a mopey, dismal or negative person who wants to take away all the fun. It doesn't even make me an angry one...
8it's not just a US phenomenon, competitive eaters are often from all over the world.
9wow - this really is a turn of events and perhaps the end of an era if kobiyashi came in 3rd place. oh well..he's still got all those other food competitions under his belt and i'm sure that he'll continue to win.
i've watched these on tv from time to time and i have to say that they really are kind of gross to watch. how can a person eat that much that fast and not get sick?
10competitive eating is a little silly but Joey Chestnut went to my alma mater, SJSU, so I have a soft spot in my heart. Go Spartans!
11I live in Chattanooga, but didn't go to this because the thought of watching these guys stuff Krystal burgers down their throats makes me sick. For anyone that doesn't know what Krystal is, it's like White Castle and only fit for consumption when intoxicated.
