To honor 50 years of being in business, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has released its new limited edition Birthday Cake Ice Blended ($4) drink, out starting today and available until Sept. 2. We've seen a slew of cake batter ice creams and frozen yogurts, so we were excited by the prospect of a cake-flavored frozen beverage from the makers of the Original Ice Blended Drink. With its birthday cake-flavored powder, whipped cream, and rainbow sprinkles, the drink looked promising to our tasters — but sadly, the blended drink disappointed us all with its lack of authenticity. Although the beverage was "not too sweet" (a plus), it simply tasted like a slightly thinner and icier vanilla milkshake. "It's as if they just repurposed an old stock of French vanilla powder and put some sprinkles on top," several grumbled. To make sure we weren't crazy, we compared it in taste to a cake-flavored ice cream in our fridge. "I'd rather wait for this to melt and pretend it's the drink instead," one taster quipped. At several hundred calories and $4 a pop, we would've preferred a flavor profile that was more memorable.
