Have You Deep-Fried at Home?

In addition to world-class events like the Aspen Food & Wine Classic, Summer weekends are prime time for checking out state fairs for their cook-offs and assortment of deep-fried treats, from the classic fish and chips to fried butter. While I've fried up a frenzy elsewhere before, I've never had the chance to try it in my kitchen. I don't have the right equipment, plus I worry my apartment will smell like oil for weeks. Have you ever tried it at home?

Not much since it uses a lot of oil and the price of peanut oil increased like crazy over the years.

Since my fryer takes a gallon of oil I tend to not fry much.

yep, but only to make tempura once when i was17 and recently to make falafel, but i would love to find a good baked falafel recipe? i hate deep frying and only eat calamari/tempura and falafel deep fried

Hell no. It's unhealthy, messy, and in my opinion, a huge waste of oil. I know the oil may be reused to a certain extent, but still, it's not the same as fresh oil. For me, there's practically no reason to deep fry.I practically never eat deep fried foods. I think the last time was last week when I took ONE BITE of my husband's french fry. I think that was my first taste of fried food in a year.

Just a few times, almost always with my sister. We used to take pizza dough and deep fry it to make donuts. I've also deep fried plantains for arepas. Not a huge fan of deep frying otherwise honestly.

I tried it once or twice, but it's such a pain in the butt and it's so messy. I don't make a lot of deep-fried foods anyway, but if I made them more often I'd probably invest in a deep-fryer.

I have a deep fryer which I just used to make patacones. Hours later, the kitchen still smells like fry oil. The best way to prevent the spread of the smell is to open the windows in the kitchen (make sure you have some cross-ventilation), close the doors to your other rooms, and hang a curtain over the kitchen doorway if you don't have a door. Of course, then you'll want to wash the curtain. Wear clothes that you don't mind smelling like fry oil. (The smell will wash out, though.) Shower afterward too. The fry oil smell gets carried around in your hair.

No. Not a huge fan of deep fried foods. Plus, with me, deep frying at home-or pretty much anywhere-would be a tort waiting to happen!

I don't deep fry much at home since it does stink up the house and makes a mess but it tastes so good.

Much more often then I should admit but less than I use to because I have a convection oven now that works wonders when you spray cooking spray on something before you cook. I never felt intimidated frying at home actually surprised others do (which means I'm probably not very bright) We make fries, homemade onion rings, donuts, chicken, egg rolls, amoungst many other things. Just be careful, smart and not afraid and you will not have a problem.

I tend to stay away from fried food, but I have deep fried in my home twice before. Once, I did it in an actual deep fryer, and worked well...but this was when I was a teen. Last year I made fried chicken in my cast iron skillet. I may actually fry some chicken this weekend...if I don't eat anything with a significant amount of calories on that day :P

But Soniabonya makes a good point--safety first! My bff's brother burned their house to the ground, and himself pretty badly, when we were kids... I've always been really extra careful using any kind of oil because of that!

Absolutely! I used to have a deep fryer but hardly used it so I couldn't justify it taking up so much cupboard space. There aren't a lot of things I fry anyway, but when I get a craving for potato croquettes I just use a deep pan now. It does stink a lot tho... I have to leave every window in the house open for a quite while to air it out so it might be a bit overwhelming in an apartment. Although, my range fan is old and inefficient so if you have better ventilation over the stove it may be much less offensive!

I'm afraid that my attempt will bring down the entire apartment. It has almost happened before within my family. No deep frying for me.

No, because I don't have the tools, but also because it's just not healthy so I try to find other alternatives and leave the frying to the restaurants.
