Do You Ever Pretend to Make Something That's Store Bought?

A friend recently admitted that she'd faked making something that was actually store bought. This prompted a discussion (and confession session) about the times we've taken credit for a dish that we actually didn't make. For the most part, everyone admitted that they'd "faked it" at some point or another — even myself!

Admit the truth (I won't tell!): Have you ever "faked" making something?

i'm pretty great on my own :) so never had an occasion to do that, but if i did i think people would see right through me.

I enjoy cooking too much, so I never tell someone that something store-bought is homemade! I want to take honest credit if someone loves something I've made (like my pumpkin roll cake from this weekend), so why lie if there's no reason to?

I have never done it... but it makes no difference to me if someone has fib a little on the origins of any tasty treat. If I buy a cake from the store for a party... it is obvious, since the price tag is still most likely on it. haha!

ive actually done the opposite... ive told people it was store bought when i actually made it.

Not wrong, but take credit for what you do or do not do. I would still eat it if you told me it was store bought.

I clicked "yes, sometimes", but it hasn't been for store bought stuff. I've taken credit for my husbands cooking before. It's been at work or for a women's group function. He doesn't mind. :P

I have done this only one time. I was supposed to make something for a bakesale for my fraternity, but with studying etc I ran out of time, so I went and bought 4 boxes of krispy treats, took them out the wrappers, and bagged them up like I made them myself. Everyone kep remarking on how perfectly I cut them lmao

i mean i have done the semi-homemade route! like i make a pumpkin cake that uses yellow cake mix and then i add stuff. but when people ask how to make it i tell them that! i wouldn't pretend its all from scratch. but if they don't ask i don't tell haha

I haven't "faked" but I have "improved" by adding to it or by garnishing. I have, on occasion, gone the "semi-homemade" road. ;) Usually, though, I just admit it with a smile. :)

I don't think it's wrong, but I don't do it. Homemade food is so much better...and most of the time, healthier!

No, I'm not a fraud. Besides, my homemade stuff is usually a lot better, so I wouldn't want to take credit for something inferior. :)

Never really felt the need. I don't see a problem with it, it's just that store-made food never seems that appetizing to me that I'd want to take credit for it.

I'll say I made it if it was like a store bought cake mix that I added stuff to and made my own frosting, because it became mine and I could have mixed it if I felt like it. If I made something like brownies that were straight out of the box, then I would say it was from a mix.

Never. My friends and family would know right away anyway since I'm known for making everything from scratch.

I don't think it's wrong necessarily, I've just never had a need to do it.... and probably wouldn't. I have problem admitting I didn't cook something!

lol bluebell that's great. I couldn't do it. I enjoy cooking when I actually do it. Besides, these days, everyone knows about my baking (specifically peach cobbler) so they'd know if I didn't make it. Lol. I don't think it's wrong but more or less stupid. Lol. If cooking is not your gift or you don't have enough time, oh well. Order the food and call it a day and say this Boston Market sure is good! Lol.

Ohh, man. When my fiance and I first started dating, I invited him over for dinner on a Friday night and he requested Indian food. Well, I had to work all day and didn't have time to make it homemade (plus I was an unpaid intern and didn't have a grocery budget to cover all the expensive spices required by Indian food), so my roommates suggested I just fake it. I never actually said that I made the food from scratch, but I threw out the packaging and let him assume it was homemade. I didn't feel bad about it at the time because I thought he was being unreasonable to expect homemade Indian food after a full day of work, and it was only the second or third date and I had no idea that we'd be getting so serious. Anyway, he was extremely impressed. He even told his mother about it, which I found out when I first met her. By that time I was wanting to fess up, now that we were getting serious, but when she said that, I felt like I couldn't tell him the truth anymore! So I kept it secret for a few more months. I felt guilty every single time we went grocery shopping together and passed the Indian foods section. And I prayed he'd never ask me to make that meal again! Finally I broke down and told him and cried about it too, because I felt like holding on to it for so long was worse than the initial deception. I apologized and he forgave me and told me it wasn't that big of a deal and that he wished I'd told him sooner rather than carry that unnecessary guilt around. I'll never fake it again!!
