zeze - I planted my first herbs in a small apartment. I just bought a set of small herb pots that fit in my windowsill, some seeds, and miracle grow. Lots of water and sunshine, and they began to grow like weeds. Now that I have a slightly larger space indoors (garden window), I've branched out to some larger pots with roma tomatoes and cayenne peppers. Most herbs seem to respond well to ample sunshine and water, so I would say the most important things are finding a sunny place and not forgetting to water (lest you have a dried herb garden, which looks very Addams family).
I am becoming a bit ambitious and going to try my hand in growing Swiss chard. I love that vegetable. I also trying to figure out what other vegetable to grow that I am willing to eat. I might grow some herbs like dill, chives, rosemary, etc. Trying to expand my palate.
I really, really want to, but I have no idea how to do it.
I want just herbs and I want to start small, hopefully indoor or a porch plant. If anyone has advice or a good website for newbies - I'd appreciate it!

This year I'm expanded my little garden to include: Cherry Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, Heirloom Tomatoes; Green/Yellow/Red Bell Peppers; String Beans; Zucchini, Cucumbers; and by way of Herbs: Lavender, Cilantro, Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, Chives and Dill. I also grabbed a random bag of 'Confetti Hot Peppers', which is marked as a surprise mix of a variety of colors and types of hot peppers. Cannot wait to see how they turn out! Getting my seeds ready always makes me feel like its finally spring!
I'm excited this is my first real garden. I am growing a bunch of lettuces, corn, soybeans, green grape tomatoes, mini orange tomatoes, dr carolyn tomatoes, wild cherry tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, lollipop tomatoes, wonderberry tomatoes, pineapple tomatillos, zucchini, cucumber, watermelon, cantelope, blueberries, bell peppers, sweet peppers, jalapenos, basil, parsley, chives, garlic, shallot, green onion, garlic chives, rosemary, sage, dill, i think there might be another herb or two.... i was excited and might have gone a bit seed happy....
I just moved to a townhouse with a huge sunny deck out back and the previous tenant left tons of pots and plants. I am taking full advantage of the supplies - I've already planted rosemary, basil, thyme, lavender, peas, squash and spinach. Once we get farther into spring, I'll pick up some tomato plants as well.
I don't have much garden space at my house, so I'm going to do an herb garden and I may plant a few tomatoes and cucumbers with a trellis. On our farmland at my in-laws', I'll grow the rest of my veggies...heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, corn, lettuce, etc.
To the anonymous comment, I used to live in NYC and at any of the farmers' markets you should be able to get herbs for planting. I always went to Union Square, though never planted an herb garden until last year in Baltimore. I am waiting for it to get a little warmer to replant.
Oh, would I love to. I tried last year to do the herb garden thing and it did not work out for me... sadly all my little plants died. I am not gardeningly gifted. I will try again, I hope there isn't a special place in hell for all the pain I have caused plants. :(
LOL Chief!
At my parents house I am growing 3 tomatoes, Hungarian wax peppers, bell peppers, zucchini, corn, watermelon and cantaloupe. A berry briar vine sprung up and I have no idea where it came from. Going to try growing yellow beans again, but I never get a good crop out of the beans. :( I have bad luck with those. Also growing mint, sage, chives, oregano, cilantro, mint, parsley and basil in the adjacent herb garden.
Oh, years ago my dad planted apples, apricot, pears and plum trees and we get a good crop of those.
At my apartment I got 2 tomatoes and got similar herbs growing as well. I have to wait until next year when hopefully, I can get a house and a yard of my own to plant in ground and get some fruit trees.

I want to try to do an indoor herb garden for the first time. My porch is already full with potted lime and meyer lemon trees (LOVE these!). I've never done herbs before, though - i.e. I'm at a loss about the size of the container, how many seeds and herb types can go together, etc. If Yum did a how-to on this it would be incredibly helpful!
YES chief!
I'm a gardener for life. 12 plants planted, 10 to go. I also got lucky with some herbs that survived the winter - parsley, lemon thyme and Greek oregano. All kinds of new toms and pepper this year, I'm super excited. First year for edible flowers, just lavender so far - this is all new to me.

I started over 250 seedlings and I call them my green babies. I'm growing beef steak tomatoes, jelly bean hybrid tomatoes, cucumbers, three types of squash, cauiliflower, artichokes, green beans, watermelon, strawberries, pumpkins, cantaloupe, dill, parsley, basil, chives, rosemary, thyme, and oregano
I'm moving, so I'll have to see what I can plant there! I hope I can do most of what I did last year: basil, oregano, parsley, sage, mint and chives, and tomatoes and cucumbers. Screw lettuce, that was a waste of time.
