My best kitchen knife broke last night while I was making dinner. It wasn't the nicest knife — when I moved into my apartment, over two years ago, my dad gave it to me and bought himself a new (much better) knife. Now I need to purchase a knife, and am considering splurging on a higher-quality, more expensive one. Should I? How do you feel about kitchen knives? Is it worth it to get a good one?

Yes! Invest. I love my Wusthof knives and I really believe they will last. The difference between my investment knives and the ones I had before is vast!
1At the same time, I recognize that inexpensive and awesome knives are also out there, and I've used them and love them too.
2Oh my gosh yes. Having the right tools is so important.
3your knife broke??? how did that happen?
4Knives are the most used tool in our kitchen and I'm grateful to have a really high quality set. With that comes some expense.
5You should definitely spend the extra cash to get a quality knife. I bought my husband the Global chef's knife for his birthday and it is easily the best knife we've ever owned and makes a big difference in our food prep time, and quality.
6Buy a Shun!!! They are fabulous. Very pricey but worth it. The first time i used it, I cut myself and didn't even feel it.
I never thought I would need an expensive knife, with one use, I could tell immediately why they are worth it.
7The sharper the knife the less chance you have of cutting yourself. A sharp knife does the work for you.
8jack henkel knives...at bed bath and beyond..get a 20% coupon and that really drops down the price. worth every penny!
9I have an aunt who works at Williams-Sonoma, so I have every brand of knife under the sun - Henckels, Wusthof, Global, etc. The very best knives I own are my Miracle Blades. It sounds a like a joke, but they are without a doubt the best $40 I've ever spent.
10I own a Wuesthof knife set which I like a lot. But a few month ago I got a Caphalon Santoki at TJ Maxx for like $10 and it's the best knife I have ever used.
11Every time I go to my mother in laws house and I have to use her 20 year old, dull knives - I hate it. I think I am going to buy my in-laws a Caphalon Santoki for Christmas. It will change their world.
I have cheap knives and I really, really want to buy good ones because I'm sick of cutting with not-very-sharp knives. I just want to wait a little while until I've done enough research to know which ones to get. I'm thinking Wusthof, since I've heard such good things about them, but we'll see.
12We have nice knives in our home but it doesn't matter how nice they are if they are dull. I take mine to get sharpened every 6 months or so.
13Definately!!
14Absolutely! When I got my new knives, it changed how I viewed cooking! I started to like (and ultimately love) cooking, because the prep work is so easy
Each time I use my knives (I got a Cutco set from a former student) I smile because they
impress me so much.
15My knives are probably my favorite houseware purchase ever.
16I have one nice Santoku that i spent $20 on, the rest of my knives are a set thats worth about the same. I have a really good sharpener and sharpen my knives regularly so I've never seen the point of spending alot on new knives.
17I love my Shun Santoku knife. Best kitchen investment I ever made.
18The best investment you can really make is a quality sharpening stone that you know how to use properly. The most expensive, highest quality knife will do you no good if it's dull!
19Wüsthof all the way!
20Yes, we got Wustoff knives as a wedding present and they are AMAZING. I was using really crappy ones for a while before the Wustoff knives arrived (they were at my parents' house) and cheap knives are dangerous - the blade would flex as I was cutting and would go after my fingers! The Wustoff knives are super sharp and sturdy and never flex like the cheap ones did.
We got stamped blades instead of forged, because although forged is higher quality, they're much more expensive. Stamped Wustoff knives are still excellent quality at a more reasonable price.
By the way, Wustoff knives are on sale at Crate and Barrel right now...
21YES YES YES. A good knife is sooo important in the kitchen. Shun all the way!!
22I have a set of Shun knives and the santoku, which I use all the time, was great in the beginning. It got dull insanely fast though, and also has some miniscule chips in the blade, despite never anything intensely hard. What a disappointment, but it still won't stop me from investing in high quality knives in the future. When they're sharp, they're such a joy to use.
23I have some nice Cutco knives from when I sold them. But they are at my parents but they don't use them either. I use really cheap knives that work pretty well.
