Do You Judge a Recipe Based on the Number of Ingredients?

My sister refuses to make a recipe if it has a long ingredient list; she can't be bothered with a dish that has tons of items. She swears that the simpler a recipe, the better the final result is. I, on the other hand, am not afraid of long ingredient lists and have been known to make dishes with tons of ingredients. How about you?

I don't mind long recipes, as long as the ingredients are affordable and I already have most or all of them on hand. It also depends on the day, my energy level, and how much time I have. More ingredients usually means more cleaning up.

I read through the recipe first and decide if I have all the ingredients on hand or not. If there are a lot of ingredients that I either already have or can use for other things, I'll make it. But if there are a lot of obscure ingredients that I know I'll never use again, I am usually reluctant to try it.

never! seeing as my favourite cuisines are north african/lebanese/indian/latin american, it'd be a pretty flavourless world with long ingredient lists. though when deciding on a recipe, no matter the length of the list, it needs to be clear that the dish will have a defining flavour, as opposed to a non-descript melange

Agreed - if I have the ingredients or if it's an ingredient I can use in lots of other recipes I might go out and purchase it. Otherwise...NEXT. =)

I enjoy cooking (or the basics, as a beginner) however I prefer to deal with a shorter ingredient list. My willingness to cook will wane some if it calls for a large amount of products. Though I care more about WHAT the ingredients are rather than how many. If the recipe sounds delicious, I would attempt a longer list of items.

Absolutely, I'm wary of a dish that requires way too many ingredients. I have no patience or desire to find a million different things just so I can eat!

I agree with the others. If its a long list of ingredients I already have at home, then thats fine. But if I have to go out and buy most of the stuff just for that one recipe, then I probably won't make it.

I don't, usually. I would have more of a problem with something that is tedious to prepare. I have a recipe for Bûche de Noël that always takes me an entire day to make lol (worth it, though :) )

I agree with bluebellknoll, too. It also depends. I have to be in the right mood to make a dish that has 25 ingredients.

I agree with bluebell. For example, with a lot of asian dishes more than half are standard ingredients that you probably already have around. It's when you actually have to purchase a bunch of random stuff you'll never use again that it's annoying.

I'm only afraid of a long list if it's a lot of exotic ingredients that are hard to find. I'm not really into hunting around town for ingredients that I may only end up using once.
