Do You Laugh at Culinary Mishaps?

Recently, I added too much flour to the bowl of my Kitchenaid mixer. The mixer was turned on when I added the ingredient, and flour ended up getting all over the place. My sister and I thought it was hysterical and could not stop laughing. Normally I'm a good sport when it comes to dealing with kitchen mistakes, but it really depends on the mishap. If I burn a few cookies and no one finds out, who cares? However, if I overpoach eggs at brunch in front of guests, the situation isn't as laughable. How about you?

Sometimes I laugh it off, but sometimes I get totally pissed off. I feel like I worked so hard and it was all in vain.

Last night I messed up my cake for a work party. I was so disappointed because it was a stupid mistake that made me buy something store-bought instead. I may have shed a tear, which I can laugh about now!

I'm with Yum on that one. If I'm making impulse cookies and they get burned, no biggie. If I'm making today-is-the-worst-day-of-my-life cookies, I'd probably have a breakdown. ;) But yeah, the picture of your mixer... totally familiar lol.

Most of the time when something goes wrong in the kitchen, I injure myself as well. But even that is funny, because it happens so much.

I tend to laugh the mistakes off, as long as the food isn't ruined beyond edibility. Sometimes mistakes make the food better too :) I've had flat macaroons, dense and mountainous sugar cookies and set off many smoke alarms over the years, most recently at my new apartment with some burnt grilled cheese sandwiches. (according to my dad and boyfriend that is :p ) I just figure, you can't be in a kitchen without something happening. Injuries (burned knuckles, sliced fingers, cracked skull) wrong ingredients (salt and sugar look VERY similar!!) and mechanical mishaps (flour everywhere). That's part of the joys of being in the kitchen. :-)

haha this reminds me , once probably ten years ago, i was baking this recipe with my friends and i dont even know what happened, we followed all the directions, but the cupcakes came out baked on the outside, but full on watery in the middle, they ran right out of their baked shells :S and the second half of the recipe which we used for a loaf of cake was so rock hard and dense you could use it as a football. it still baffles me.

I think the only time I didn't laugh something off was when I spent my entire day off (the only one I had in 3 weeks) baking this huge cake for my sister's birthday party and, as I was carving off the edges to shape it, I tested it to find that it tasted completely like MILDEW. Apparently, the butter I bought was bad and I couldn't even notice! I almost cried because my entire day (baking in a city apartment on a 95 degree day as well) was wasted.

Most the time I laugh it off, however there was one EPIC incident that certainly wasn't laughed off. I was trying to make homemade ravioli and the pasta dough kept sticking and they were ripping and just not working (and I was super pms-y) and finally I had ENOUGH and just started screaming at the stupid ravioli and literally throwing them everywhere. It was seriously the worst meltdown I have had in probably the last 5 years.

I can't seem to cook for my boyfriend, who is not my biggest critic on the subject. When I cook for him, nothing is funny.

It depends on what happens and what the dish is for. Once, I was baking some bars for work and I totally overbaked them and they turned out rock-hard and completely inedible. I was super upset because I didn't have time to re-bake them in time to bring them in for a treat. But most of the time, it's just funny when stuff happens in the kitchen...like when my husband tries to make bread in the bread machine and it NEVER turns out right or when I burn things in the broiler because I'm not watching them closely enough.

Usually, I laugh at myself. I'm a klutz and regularly spill/drop/burn myself. However, there are times when it's the end of the day and all I want to do is eat, and I have no tolerance. The last time it happened I dropped an entire meal on the floor and kicked my cabinet so hard in frustration I sprained my foot.

I have to laugh.. I'm so clumsy... I wouldn't walk into the kitchen if I took it too seriously! the only time this gets less funny is when I burn myself! which is far to often! you would of think I'd learn! hey ho..!

As long as the meal isn't ruined I'm good. There was one time I really screwed up and I couldn't help but crack up hysterically - I was doing a pasta dish from Giada DeLaurentis, it was a spicy pasta (can't recall the exact name) and I was supposed to infuse some olive oil with 1 tsp of red pepper flake and instead i used 1tbsp LOL the pasta was SOOOOO hot even my husband who likes spicy food couldnt take it :P

Well, last night's mishap was cutting off a little bit of finger/nail while chopping thyme. I let someone else do the rest of the knife business after that. >_<

Most times I laugh because most times it is funny. I remember at night my cousin was making pumpkin soup and she was using the blender, but the top came off and splattered everywhere. It was funny to me, but not so much to her. I cleaned it up for her though.

Depends on my state of mind... and if something was completely ruined. I don't care if it is just the hubby & I..but if guests were coming. :scared:

Completely depends on my state of mind. Sometimes it's just funny; other days, when I'm at wit's end with something else on my mind, it's not funny or fun at all.

When I'm making a new recipe for the first time sometimes I don't get it quite right, but I learn for the next time that I make it. I usually don't laugh it off but I don't get that upset either.
