Do You Pay Attention To Expiration Dates?
Jun 27 2007 • By
it is just as important as nutritional information <3
oh my goodness I ALWAYS check dates. If its past the date I dont do it. I do have a friend who has a jar of applebutter from 1999, disgusting. No one is going to eat it. I think it is beyond being expired.
Oh, and eggs, the broken yolk isn't always a telltale sign. I had some spend months in the frige and we used them. (I was young, we didn't know.) Yolks were solid many, many months after date, but we were probably pushing our luck.
mixes, like pancake, bread and muffin type, have caused respiratory problems and sent people to the hospital if used too far after the expiry date.
i usually do with dairy products...but otherwise i just make sure it doesn't smell/look funny.
Depends what it is. Usually no though. Most stuff doesn't go bad by the expiration date ... it's just a sell by date. I have had sour cream still be good a month later - no mold, no smell, no discoloration at all! I never pay attention to the date on the egg carton.
I pay attention but if something is in the fridge and it's a few days past the expiration date and doesn't smell weird I'll still use it.
if its been sitting in my cabinet or fridge for awhile i'll check the date.
OMG, I have OCD when it comes to food. From the preparation to the expiration dates, I'm a stickler. I throw out anything expired, even though experts say certain products are ok past the date.
oh my gosh, I'm expiration date obsessed. I won't eat/drink anything if it's the date on the package. And if stuff doesn't have a date, I won't even touch it. I think I was traumatized from all the expired food in my grandparents pantry/fridge when I was younger...!!!
I am an expiration date freak. My family makes fun of me for it. Oh, well!
I check expiration dates, but only after the products have gone bad... Maybe that is backward.
After escorting a friend to the hospital with a nasty case of food poisoning in college, I'm also a freak about expiration dates and cleanliness in the kitchen! Germs are not my friends, and I'm susceptible to disease so I'm super careful. Better safe than sorry has gotten me this far, so I'll stick with that!
It is the 1st thing I look at.
.... once it's exposed to the air and not in it's original packaging it's bound to spoil faster.
Check out this egg-cellent -- sorry for the pun! :) -- website on eggs A-Z from Georgia. It answered a lot of my questions. http://www.georgiaeggs.org/pages/expirationdate.html I work in the dairy field, and I feel that expiration dates should be used as a guide. Just like you shouldn't use something way past the date (usually most last 7 days past the pull date), you should also be aware that products may not last until that date either. I come across people who say their milk has spoiled before the date. Well... what I can recommend to them is to check the temperature in your fridge (is it cold enough? good air circulation?), remember to store dairy in the back away from the front and out of the door of the fridge, and if that still isn't working, by a smaller container or size of that product that you will use faster.
I've read that eggs can be consumed up to 3-5 weeks after date of purchase. Chuck 'em after that!
Eggs don't really need an expiry date it is just for a caution. So I don't really look at eggs too much. But just because of the way my brain thinks I won't eat them passed a month old. Everything else gets tossed asap!
The only thing I will eat past expiration is yogurt, because i heard its actually good for you
religiously...both in the store and in the fridge :)
Always. I have a sensitive stomach and can't risk getting sick because I ate spoiled food.
I guess I should be more aware next time I shop.
depends on what it is..i usually only check if it looks/smells odd
