Do You Purchase Off of The Registry?

When you attend a wedding/baby shower etc. and there is a gift registry, do you purchase a gift off of the registry?

I almost always do. It is there for a reason and contains items that the couple actually wants and takes the guess work out for the guests. Sometimes I wish people had more of a range of prices though--sometimes all there are are expensive items that I don't feel comfortable buying for someone I don't really know. When I got married I had two lists: Target and Macy's.Target had the more cheaper every day items.Macy's had our fine china pattern and other high end things.In the end we got a lot of money, some items we didn't ask for but liked, and more people who shopped on the Macy's list than Target. It was a nice range of items. And thankfully we didn't get an item that we hated or asked WTF?

I usually get something off the registry, although if all the affordable stuff has already been purchased (it's happened) I either get them a gift card from one of the stores they registered at or something in identical colors that they didn't register for. Somebody once asked for brown placemats, but since they were already taken I got them cloth napkins and a matching table runner. But I ALWAYS include a gift receipt. I might rebel against the registry, but I wouldn't stick anybody with something they hate.

You know what I hate? This happened to me. Don't know if it has happened to anyone else. I registered at Target and Crate and Barrel and you could view both registries on-line. I registered for "good" stuff. (I don't mean to come off snobby!!) But I didn't ask for anything outrageous. Some people viewed the registries then went to other stores and bought cheaper versions of things I wanted. So not only was I stuck with cheap duplicates of things I already received but I had no idea where the items came from so I couldn't return them and get things that I actually wanted.

I always try to buy something off the registry (because I was somewhat annoyed by all the people who didn't buy things off our wedding registry, resulting in us getting like 37 wine glasses), but if it's someone I know well, I try to supplement my gifts with something more personal.

Yes, you know for sure it's something they need/want. I also try to throw in a fun gift that they didn't ask for too (frames, baby toy, etc..).

I go with the rigistry unless they are really good friends and then I know what to get them that is special.

Way way better to get them something they asked for! (Unless EVERYTHING on the registry has already been purchased.) Who wants something random when there are things you said, "Hey, I WANT THIS" about that you didn't get. I think it is more rude to ignore the registry.

I am pretty much a registry person, but if the gift is something that I can buy accessories for I buy it. For instance say you buy an ice bucket - a good bottle of wine to be given along with it is a must!

Usually I will buy strictly off the registry, unless I know that they don't have something that's just a really neat item and I think that they would appreciate.

If it's someone I don't know really well or just casually, I'm registry all the way. But with someone I know well or with family, I like to do something personal like a cross-stitched sampler or afghan to commemorate the occassion, an oil painting, monogrammed towels or napkins...whichever of my hobbies they seem to appreciate.

I mean, these people picked out exactly what they want for their home. I think it's even a little bit rude and presumptuous to buy them something else.

whoops. I made a mistake with the voting - I think I misread the question. :? But I usually stick with the registry. I agree lilren - I believe that it's easy for them and easy for me. No hastles :)

I used to try to think of an original gift, but then I realized that the registry was stuff they really wanted, and my goal is always to give a gift that a person actually wants. So I'm strictly a Registry girl now.

Definitely!! Why get something that they didn't ask for? The couple knows best what their needs and style are.
