Do You Read the Recipe Before Starting to Cook?

i use recipes for baking only... cooking is just art for me. haven't managed to make baking an art yet, but working on it :)

totally! 1) i gotta know what's in it so i can make sure i have everything i need (i hate those mid-cooking store-runs) and 2) i gotta know if i have the proper utensils, skills or most importantly the PATIENCE to attempt the recipe!

i only use recipes when i bake and yeah, i look first unless it is for chocolate chip bars as i have made those so often now.

When I use a recipe, I usually read it quickly before - just to have an idea what to expect. But most of the time I have bad surprises anyway (e.g. : I read add 1 tomato, when the recipe says "add 1 lb tomatoes..."). I must be recipe dyslexic :)

Since I'm just starting to experiment with new recipes besides the ones that were passed down from family, I definitely read the recipe a couple times first just to get a feel of what I need to do. Then I see if I can substitute any ingredients. And while cooking, I glance over the recipe again to make sure I'm on the right track.

I usually skim... but sometimes I don't and then end up going 'uh-oh!'

If it's a brand new recipe, I'll read it. You need to know what ingredients to have & if you have to marinade or chill something beforehand. (I've had to go to plan B more than a few times, because I didn't read it beforehand.) Otherwise, I'll wing it on my own.

i usually read it a couple times over so i know i have everything down. i don't like to keep going back to the recipe once i've started to cook...i need to be in the moment...hahahahahah.

I always do, but somehow it never comes out the way I think it will. Too back I didn't pick up my Italian grandmother's cooking talent :(

I usually skim the recipe first, it depends on what i'm making. If it's for a special occasion, I always read the recipe. If it's an everyday sort of thing I'll wing if I get to a part I don't have time/ingredients for. It drives YumJimmy crazy, he's a read it over and over and follow it to a T. Even if i do read it over and over, I don't always follow it. Usually it's okay, but sometimes... oh well learn from losing, no?

I'll read it over once to see if I like the ingredients. Then If I make it of course I read it again! But most of the time I cook from the heart...family recipes that aren't written down and also my own recipes that are in my head! That's why I really can't share my recipes at YUM....I cook to taste and from memory. Now baking is a different story. That's chemistry.... You have to follow the recipes.

Saturn9, Im guilty of that too. I don't know why I always seem to skip "must refrigerate for 8 hours" or something important like that. Last week I served my poor hungry boyfriend dinner at 10:30 becuase of an error like that.

I try my best not to cook! When I do cook I like to try out different recipes of my own, different spices, etc. I've learned to trust my instincts and it usually turns out yummy. I could never bake w/o recipes though.

The first time I make a new recipe I will follow it exactly. If I like it and make it again, I usually improvise. :pepino:

If I've never made something before, I'll follow the recipe. If I've made it before, or it's something fairly simple, I'll do my own thing with it.

I usually read through it once to see what ingredients I will need and if I have all the pots/pans needed. Then I'll read it while I cook to make sure I am doing it right.
