Do You Salt Food Before Tasting It?

My friend Vikki is a self-proclaimed salt freak. She loves salt so much that she carries small packets of it in her wallet and salts everything before tasting it. I'm the opposite, however; I like to taste the food before I season it with salt. How about you?

I don't get how people can be insulted by someone adding salt.It's just like using ketchup or steak sauce.People are insulted them.I like salt.I put salt on everything and I'm not going to be apologize for it.Everyone has food preferences and it shouldn't matter.

salt doesn't enhance the flavor of foods for me, it detracts from it. whenever i taste salt, all i can think about is how unhealthy it is. I'm also insulted when people I cook for add salt without tasting first.

People who salt food before tasting is one of my biggest pet peeves! If I spent a bunch of time making a nice meal, then I see them dump a bunch of salt on it, it's immensely frustrating. I don't undersalt....how hard is it to just take a taste first?

My little one doesn't like salt or pepper, so if I'm cooking I add it before tasting, but never if someone else cooked it.

If I'm cooking, I usually season as I go, but if I'm eating at someone else's house, I'll tend to taste my food first before salting it. My mother-in-law is notorious for cooking with zero salt, so I almost always have to add salt to stuff that she cooks.

I always taste food before adding any salt, even then just a small bit. Salt can make food taste better but a little goes along way.

I don't add salt ever, even when cooking. I find it highly unneceessary. I like the actual FOOD to shine. Not eat salt.

not a big fan of salt. i hardly salt anything. ever. but a girlfriend of mine got this English salt and that had to be the best salt I ever had. I couldn't help but sprinkle some over my pasta ^^;

I only salt the foods that I cook at home, but even then, I do so lightly. I have found that most restaurant foods are already too salty, some to the point that I end up drinking insane amounts of water to recover. For that reason, I always ask that they not add additional salt when preparing my meal.

I don't use salt on prepared foods, just on like home fries or scrambles eggs when i'm cooking them

Nope. I don't add salt to my cooking or food. It's for health reasons, as I think I'm predispositioned for certain medical conditions due to my family history.

how unhealthy is that! to salt food before tasting is ridiculous! you're not going to taste the food, but only THE SALT. what if the food is already too salty!?

sometimes..when I'm cooking it myself, sometimes I overdid it. If it's being presented to me (already cooked), I'd taste it first before putting salt on it.

I don't but my hubby does. It used to irk me but now I've made some adjustments (adding less salt when I cook) so it probably ends up being better for me.

Most restaurants' fare are heavily salted for my taste so I can't imagine putting more salt on it. I believe what skigirl said that salting before tasting can be a little insulting to the chef. I watched a show where the chef went crazy when his patrons would salt the dish before tasting and complained the dish tasted bad.

I'm a bit of a salt snob...I just love it but clearly in moderation. I use rock sea salt for everything, it's much milder than ordinary table salt nor does it have a bitter after taste. I also like the fancier sea salts when using it raw or salting after cooking (ex, salads, grilled meat, etc) like fleur de sel, pink Himalayan, Cyprian flakes, blue Iranian, black Hawaiian...My hubby buys me salt instead of classic gifts because I just enjoy all the different tastes and appreciate it so much more.

I've definitely ruined food by salting it before tasting it and I now always taste things before I salt them!

I used to be a salt addict. Something weird happened where now I never add salt to anything and have even been using less salt in my recipes (except with eggs, they just taste too good with salt!)
