ONLY whole, fresh-grated nutmeg...it lends a terrific sugar-free sweetness to oatmeal, makes french toast taste awesome, and it's essential in sweet potatoes, eggnog, etc. And as other people have said, the pre-grated stuff loses its oils and goes stale too quickly, but you can keep a little bottle of whole nuts for years. One suggestion, though: to prevent accidental "nut loss" (ha!), try grating the nutmeg over a plate or bowl until you have the desired amount, and then add the grated nutmeg to your recipe. I have accidentally dropped whole nuts into pots of bubbling oatmeal, etc. several times. Ouch!

The fiance and I bought some fresh at Whole Foods a few months ago and I've been baking spiced nuts with it, putting it with brown sugar and cinnamon on top of my sweet potatoes, it's absolutely amazing!! If anyone else has recipes, send them my way!!

yes - ever since i saw a chef use it on TV i've started to do it myself. it makes a difference - but then again, fresh ingredients usually do

Nope- I love nutmeg (never used fresh thou) but after finding out that too much nutmeg can cause hallucinations or be toxic to people I try to use it with caution cause I use to go overboard with the 'meg. Darn you Alton Brown always raining on my spice parade!

Nah...it's way to far to go for like a teaspoon of an ingredient that, in my opinion, doesn't make that much of a difference fresh or not.... I'm happy with my spice racked nutmeg.

Always fresh. The whole nutmegs keep forever, whereas ground nutmeg tastes like sawdust after a few months.

I really think nutmeg is the most disgusting spice on the planet so I just never use it hahaha

I know that nutmeg really enhances the flavor of many dishes, but I never seem to use it...dried or fresh!

I love nutmeg. I use the whole nutmeg. I grate it into omelets, my hamburger mix, on hot chocolate and into soups. I use it every day. I guess I put nutmeg into almost everything I make. I particularly love to mix it with sage in any kind of meat dish.
