Doughnuts at Weddings: Love It or Hate It?

I recently went to a wedding that had cupcakes instead of the traditional cake and a doughnut tower for the groom's cake. Well, the cupcakes were good, but I wouldn't be able to tell you how the doughnuts were because after a quick trip to the ladies' room they were all gone! The guests had spoken, and clearly the doughnuts took the cake. It's a fun and tasty alternative to fancier wedding day fare — what do you think?

Tacky, tacky, tacky. Save that "cuteness" for another party. Weddings are elegant, black tie affairs. If I'm having an elegant dinner for 100+ people at my reception, they are not eating cupcakes and doughnuts.

I agree with with chloe bella that's it can be an interesting and surprising element at a wedding. These doughnuts didn't replace the trditional wedding cake.. they were just served as the groom's cake... which is usually more whimsical... I think these would be a great thing to have at a casual backyard/beach wedding or even served at the post-wedding brunch for destination weddings!!

@chloe bella It's not interesting. It's ghetto. Weddings are white tie events. Spent so much on the rest of the wedding they couldn't afford the cake? That's what pops in my mind. I would NOT be happy being served doughnuts during such an event.

I put "hate it" just because I don't like doughnuts AT ALL. They give me a stomach ache. But, I like the IDEA of having doughnuts or cupcakes instead of the traditional wedding cake. The people who think they're tacky or too informal are missing the point. It's the juxtaposition of a traditionally casual element in a traditionally formal environment that makes it interesting. It all depends on the environment and how they're presented.

Hard to imagine an elegant evening affair that ends with eating sticky donuts (which are the most casual of hand held fast food breakfast items) with your fingers...

never heard of that but i'm not a fan; not a fan of cupcakes either. i like traditional wedding cake.

It would be great for a morning wedding but think it's kind of tacky for an evening wedding.

Love it. I attended a wedding where petite donuts (as well as other petite goodies) were served with excellent coffees. There were baristas available that made coffee drinks to order. It was a morning wedding, and these were offered to the guests before the ceremony started. The donuts did NOT replace the wedding cake, per se, but it was served as part of the menu. I thought it was a great idea, given it was a morning wedding.
