Family-Style Dining: Love It or Hate It?

I'm always excited to try new cuisine while dining out. So, when a restaurant serves up family-style, I'm all for it. I love getting a few plates to share, since it means I get to sample more of the menu. Plus, the atmosphere seems more relaxed and intimate. Still, I have friends who totally disagree; they're a little choosier with their meal selections and don't like having to compromise their order to appeal to a bigger group. What do you think? Is family-style something you enjoy?

If I am paying for something to eat then I want to get what I want and not have to compromise on food.

For most Asian cuisine where the food is served in small, bite-sized pieces, I love it. I don't like it for other cuisines though. I really don't like that family style Italian chain, why would I want a bunch of different pasta types on my plate?

i have in-laws coming in this weekend and im going to cook fajitas i always serve them up fam style

I usually love trying many different things so in some cases it would work for me but I am allergic to shellfish and stay very far from fish because of cross contamination fears. I don't eat veal or lamb and don't want to impose all of that on the other diners. It is much easier for me to find something on a menu I can handle than order in a group to share.

It isn't so much getting sick that is a concern but I just don't find it appealing.Keep your own fork in your own zone.

Got used to family style, living in Asia not a big deal you do get to try everything, in terms of germs from sharing never once did I get sick.

I love it, I always have such a hard time choosing which dish I want...so with family style i can usually get both! Double dipping doesn't scare me, so a little cross-utensil "contamination" doesn't bother me, i'm usually dining with family or friends anyways.

i do love it, because i HATE when people eat off my plate. what bugs me even more is when you are sitting down to dinner and whoever you are with is eating their meal and constantly asking "can i have a bite of yours?"...esp when they are trying to eat my dessert! i dont share dessert well at all!!!

Hate it, you know at some point someone is going to put the fork that was just in their mouth into the plate you are also serving from.

I only like it when we get Chinese food for whatever reason. Mostly because I always want to try a little bit of everything without having the temptation of going to an all you can eat buffet.

Depends on the type of cuisine. I can be a picky eater at times and prefer to have my own dish. Other times, if I'm already familiar with the food I don't mind ordering a bunch of dishes and sharing.

I agree with kscincotta, I've tired a lot of things I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise because of eating family style.And it would be a sad sad visit to any Chinese restaurant if it weren't for family style!

I really like family style! I can be something of a picky eater and eating family style lets me try a few new things without having to commit to a whole dish. I've definitely expanded my culinary horizons eating family style.
