Puffy Delights: Tasting Kraft's Jet-Puffed Flavored Marshmallows

Oct 8 2012 - 11:10am

Marshmallows are popular around these parts; at Sugar HQ, we can't get enough of their springy texture and blank-slate readiness for whimsical flavors like green tea [1] and rose [2]. So when I came across an assortment of seasonal flavors from Kraft's classic Jet-Puffed marshmallow brand, I knew it was time for an office taste test. Keep reading to find out what taste testers thought of mallow flavors like cinnamon bun and German chocolate cake.

Pumpkin Spice Mallows

We adored these squat pumpkin-shaped marshmallows at first sight. Biting into the spongy treat only sealed the deal, as their spicy flavors of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves were a spot-on representation of pumpkin pie. Try floating a few in a homemade pumpkin-spice latte [3] for a festive Fall treat.

Chocolate Royale Marshmallows

While these chocolate candies were delightful in theory, most tasters felt that they fell flat in practice. At best, they were reminiscent of "anemic hot cocoa." We couldn't get past their chalky texture and "generic brown flavor, [similar to] the way that cheap cherry lollypops taste red." One succinct taster summed her feelings up with a simple "Oof."

Jumbo StarMallows

Chipper and charming, these jumbo marshmallows tasted nearly identical to Jet-Puffed's traditional vanilla variety, only with a slightly firmer texture. While they'd be perfect for patriotic s'mores, detractors felt that their wonky star shape could have been executed better.

Chocolate Mint Marshmallows

While we had high hopes for these swirled confections, they were a near-universal flop. Chalky, "not minty enough," and plagued by a "muddled, artificial taste," they were almost universally panned; one taster even spit hers out in disgust.

German Chocolate Cake Mallow Bites

Coconut-lovers couldn't keep their hands off of these treats inspired by the classic dessert [4]. One minor gripe: the chocolate flavor plays second fiddle to their copious coating of flaky, toasted coconut.

Cinnamon Bun Marshmallows

By and large, we were disappointed by this "superbland" take on the breakfast bite. Tasters felt that they "tasted like nothing," or worse, like soap, and wished that their cinnamon flavor was more pronounced.

Ice Cream Cone Mallow Bites

While these dainty Neapolitan marshmallows were aesthetically pleasing, tasters were ambivalent about their actual flavor. Fans of the original Jet-Puffed marshmallows will find comfort in the vanilla cones, as well as the mildly flavored chocolate version, whose flavors were difficult to differentiate. While inoffensive, the strawberry versions could stand to have more bite.

Toasted Coconut Marshmallows

While these paled in comparison to the German chocolate cake minimallows, those who love coconut found these fair. Despite a generous coating of toasted coconut, many found their flavor a touch artificial and griped over their aggressively toothsome texture.
