The recent news that most households would fail restaurant-style health inspections has me rethinking my every move as I’m prepping food in my kitchen. Add to that the fact that it’s National Food Safety Education Month, and I thought it’d be a great time to test your food safety smarts! Start the quiz to see if your food handling habits make the grade.

i always wash the prewashed produce! I got e. Coli poisoning a few years ago from a bag of prewashed spinach! never again will i eat spinach without washing it first.

meh. i still live, even though my kitchen is probably disgusting. although i do always wash my greens. e coli isn't fun.

^^ Agree. I try not to buy the precut at all. The only exception is the baby leaf lettuce at TJ.

Even if it is labeled "prewashed" you should definitely still wash! In fact, it's better to not even buy it in the bag. Or to buy prechopped veggies or fruit. My best friend's husband worked in a place where they did all of that....and he says he refuses to buy ANY of those things now....

7 out of 10, but I err on the safe side when it comes to food storage/handling. I always wash prewashed greens.

Do not use Fahrenheit and do not know the conversion offhand so got those ones wrong

I don't think you put meat or cheese (from ham and pineapple pizza) into the compost...

I got 8/10. I worked in the food industry for 7 years, I knew all of the temps. The two I got wrong were the one about the pizza (I said 2-3 days, better safe than sorry, especially since you have no idea how long the ingredients have been out at the pizza shop) and the one about the washed greens. Bagged salad is typically where people get E Coli.

I break most rules and I'm sure I'm older than most on this site. So here it goes - I defrost my meat in sink, I don't wash my bagged greens, I use one cutting board for everything, my quiche is usually a week old b/f it is completely gone and my dogger eats off my fork at all meals. Oh I could go on and on; and am rarely sick. Germaphobes are a crackup to me. My niece gets all weirded out when I eat my maters straight off the vine before washing them with the hose. :rotfl:

I didn't score well because I guess I'm too careful. I agree with Nikki, washing pre-washed veggies is something I always do. I buy pre-washed spinach but always wash it thoroughly.

Question number 4 should be True not False. Even if it says "pre-washed" you should still give it a good rinse. You do not know what it was washed with or what it touched after being washed. Washing pre-washed stuff has become habit for me ever since I went with my Dad to his Nutritionist appt at the Mayo, after his liver transplant. She strongly suggested doing so.

holy germicide!! i usually do really well......i only got THREE right here..... and i am the Queen of leaving food out at room temp too....
