Have You Ever Bid on Food or Wine at a Silent Auction?

BellaSugar and I recently attended a Bay Area charity event, White Caps and Night Caps, sponsored by The Associates of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital to benefit the organization's burn unit. The event included a silent auction of expensive wine, but in the wake of the San Bruno gas explosion, there were lots of wallets opened and the bidding was high for bottles like this magnum of Armida PoiZin. Have you ever bid on something similar?

It's not that I set out not to bid on food. I have never bid on anything as I have never been to an auction.

Once at a silent auction I noticed a package for a $300 dinner at an outstanding local restaurant, plus a $30 gift certificate for a theater company. Nobody had bid on it, since the package was titled and marketed on the theater experience. I picked up an amazing dinner for about $50. The boyfriend and I had a wonderful time, and now every time I go to a silent auction he asks if I'll get a gift certificate to that same restaurant. Unfortunately, that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
