The most abundant variety in the US, the anjou (pronounced "ON-ju") pear is available almost year-round. These pears, which are of French origin, have an egg-shaped body, a green skin, and a juicy, soft flesh. Unlike some other types of pears, anjous do not change color as they ripen, and remain green even when fully ripe.

Comice are the only pears that can beat Bartlett for taste...where they fall down is in their thick, tough skin...if somebody says they are 'thin-skinned,' well...Bartletts must have no skin at all...worth wading through the skin to get succulent flesh, though...mmmm...

i used to think that all pears were alike and then i realized that like apples, they have different colors and therefore different tastes. thank you for sharing this since i've learned even more about the different ones that i knew by name only. it just reminds me of a SATC episode where samantha goes out with the guy (turtle) who spends all this time trying to figure out what type of pear is in his dish.
