Gin can be a polarizing spirit. With the exception of a few gin and tonics, I've always avoided it; however, a bunch of new gins on the market have converted me into a gin lover. One such gin, Right gin, is my current favorite.
Recently, I was invited to a seminar hosted at the brand's loft, here in San Francisco. The event was put on by Nirvino, the awesome social-drinking website that let's you rate cocktails and wine, and led by bad-boy bartender Josh Harris of 15 Romolo. Harris discussed the essentials to building a home bar and walked us through a blind gin-tasting.
To find out more about the tasting and check out all my images from the event, keep reading.
Basically, there are three types of gin: the most common London-dry style (Beefeater, Bombay), the floral style (Hendricks), and the newer Western-style gins (Right, Bluecoat). To illustrate the drastic differences, Harris had us sip from glasses filled with the three styles. The first was difficult to swallow and gag-inducing. The second was smooth and aromatic. With its crisp cleanliness, the third tasted suspiciously like vodka! Wrong, it was actually Right. Right was created by partners who didn't like gin. While it has all the typical ingredients of gin, it lacks the sharp bite found in dryer gins, and is exceptionally easy to drink. I plan on getting a bottle of Right to experiment with at home.
Have you tried Right gin? How do you feel about gin in general?

Fossil
I've only had Plymouth gin, which I usually drink combined with sprite. I think I'll give this a try too.
1Now gin is really "Right" up my alley but I prefer the juniper berries in Tanqueray!
2The only gin I like is Bombay Sapphire. I could drink that straight!
3We love Hendricks in my house!
4If "Right" doesn't prove you wrong, *I* will.
5I'm actually not a fan of the Western style gins that are hopped up on huge numbers of aromatics and weird punchy flavors. I'm the same with beer - balance is key. So I love classic Bombay and Tanqueray. Sapphire and Tanq Ten are just a little too assertive for my liking.
An old friend of mine's husband is the founder of Nirvino! How fun that it popped up here!
Also, to keep this on topic, I hate gin. I think it tastes like bug spray.
6I love gin
and I don't want my gin tasting like vodka.
7Yes Gin should NOT taste like Vodka!
Ever.
I will take Hendricks any day of the week...
8My typical gin is Tanqueray - but I get Hendricks for the ultimate treat.
The smell
of gin makes my mouth water, I would wear it as perfume if I could.
9wtf is the point in having a gin that tastes like vodka? are we going to start having tequilas + bourbon that also taste like vodka?? there is a reason there are different spirits, let's just celebrate their differences, rather than making them all dull + flavourless
10I'm not a gin drinker and we got a bottle of gin as a housewarming gift, but can't return it :\ Other than mixing with Sprite are there any other deent ways to drink gin, without having to buy more mixers?
11decent* sorry.
12@Soniabonya Love gin, but w/ sprite it's just wrong. A middle-shelf gin like Seagrams w/ tonic & a heavy lime twist (we're talking a 1/4 of a lime per oz of booze) is a great litmus to see if you're really a gin drinker. Oh yeah love a greyhound/salty dog too!
13@busybeegal Banana Republic has a perfume that smells remarkably like gin and tonic. It's their classic scent, I think.
What's the point of a gin that tastes like vodka? I love Tanqueray for the junipery smell and taste.
@SoniaBonya Try mixing it with mint, lemonade and cucumbers. I had a "spa martini" somewhere that was sort of like a lemon drop with mint and cucumbers but had been made with gin. It was lovely and refreshing, perfect for a summer evening.
