Happy Birthday Alice!

Today, April 28, is Alice Waters' birthday. Waters is one of the most influential chefs of our time: her famed restaurant Chez Panisse single handedly spearheaded the California cuisine movement. I think Alice Waters is great but not a chef. She has done wonderful things in the way of food and using what is available but she never cooks it herself which is what a chef does.

I love Alice Waters and I love her philosophy, but I find it extremely difficult to follow, living in the Northeast. There just aren't that many purveyors of local whole foods here between October and June. I did join a CSA this year, and we can make our first pick up in June. It was $300 for once a week pick-ups June-September. I'm excited for my vegetables to get here, the freshness is definitely a huge plus, but I'm also a little nervous because I will have to cook and eat whatever they give me and it might be something weird or so much I can't deal with it!
