In case you haven't heard, the latest Harry Potter film opens this Wednesday. Since PartySugar and I are total dorks big kids at heart, we're hoping to find ourselves in line for the midnight screening. However, it's bound to be chilly, so I thought it would be nice to pack a flask or two of warm delicious drinks - specifically warm, frothy butterbeer (if you have to ask what that is, then either do yourself a favor and start at book 1, or run as fast as you can to the next post). If you'd like to whip up your own batch of butterbeer (we've got two versions - hot & cold), just read more
Hot Butterbeer
From Elanor Isolda at The Leaky Lounge
1 litre cream soda
2-3 tbsp butter
2-3 tbsp brown sugar
200ml single cream
4 or 5 Werther's Originals
- Put the cream soda in a pan to boil.
- Melt the butter and sugar together until the sugar has dissolved.
- Pour the butter and sugar mixture into the pan of boiling cream soda (make sure the soda is boiling, or the butter and sugar will solidify).
- Add the cream.
- Add the Werther's Originals and stir continuously until they melt.
- Serve hot.
- You can also add a couple of shots of Butterscotch Schnapps for that extra kick!

Cold Butterbeer
From Britta Blvd
1 cup butterscotch schnapps
7 cups cream soda (almost one 2 liter bottle)
Carefully mix just before serving, adding the schnapps to the soda then stirring gently to mix well, or the fizz will dissipate too soon.
Serve in beer mugs and enjoy!

2This is too fun to pass up! (At the least the cold version is super simple!!!)
3This is awesome! I never stopped to think that I could actually whip up my own butterbeer! I can't wait to try the hot recipe on a nice chilly day!
4How fun!
5This is awesome! Y'all aren't the only dorks - I'm going to the midnight movie screening and a Barnes & Noble HP release party when Deathly Hallows comes out in a couple weeks. And I'm totally psyched about both!
6haha kaciegrrl, i am doing the exact same thing! and i just made the hot butterbeer to sip while rereading the book before i see the movie and it was fabulous!!!
7How in the world did you guys come up with that?! YOUR BRILLIANT!
8Yeah - you guys own the brilliant.
This sounds super delicious - I work at a bookstore, and I'm sure everyone who'll be working fifteen hour shifts will love this recipe when they get off in the morning
9I'm so excited about the movie tomorrow night. I'm so making this for a Harry Potter party my sister, cousin, and I are having in 2 weeks. Thanks!

15yay for Harry Potter! so excited about the book and the movie and NOW trying some butterbeer!
16black mamba - cream soda is usually vanilla flavored soda, here's more info. hope that helps!
17Cold Butterbeer sounds like a bewitching drink!
18!!!! That's all I can say(type)! I'm so excited for this!
19so freaking awesome! but what's Werther's Originals??
20Hmmm...Beef, sounds good! =)
21yummy ^_^
22That hot butterbeer sounds delicious! Yum!
23i like the sounds of these and all....but i was hoping for another boozy one. ya know...cause it is! if someone could come up with a more potent version i would be sooooo stoked. but i like the idea of drinkin the hot one while reading (dont wanna be buzzin when reading!)
24Delicious! I always wondered what this would taste like and now I can find out!
25Oh man, I want some butterbeer.
26my friends and i tried to make firewhiskey. you know, by lighting whiskey on fire! it was fun.
I'd like a taste but to lazy to make it myself.
27haze1nut - werther's originals are a type of candy that is like a hard caramel, you can learn more about them here.
scissorz - in my butterbeer research i did read a recipe that was your favorite pale ales combined with butterscotch schnapps. Also, you could try adding some whisky or bourbon to the first recipe and see how it turns out!
28thanks man!
29yay for harry potter
30oh my god! this is amazing!!!
whoever made this up is seriously the coolest person ever!
i'm so going to make this the night book 7 comes out!!!
31my friend steph and i brought bottles of butterbeer to the midnight showing, and they were delicious! the people around us wanted to know where we got it, and when we told them we made it, they were all wicked jealous. it was fun times. lol
32I am going to see Harry Potter on Monday and perhaps go to the Midnight Magic party on Friday at my local Borders. Perhaps I shall whip up some of this and enjoy!
33Amazing idea!! I tried the hot version, and it was goooood. Although if I made it again, I'd probably leave out most or all of the butter...it was a bit too much, I didn't like drinking butter.
34aaa I'm so sad - you inspired me to make Philosopher Stone cookies! http://www.eruanna.net/philosopher-stone-cookies-and-my-new-project/
35I've had the cold alcoholic version with ginger ale instead of cream soda - I'm addicted now!
36i made the hot one, it's so good.
37i made the hot one, it's so good.
38The hot butterbeer was a HUGE favorite at my HP party. We loved it both with and without the Schnapps.
I was distressed to discover that A&W Cream Soda is difficult to find where I live (i.e., two grocery stores came up empty), so I bought Jones Cane Sugar Cream
Soda, which was about four times more expensive but possibly contributed to the deliciousness of the recipe.
Note: It's hard to tell when something carbonated is actually boiling, but if you look really close, the bubbles from the boiling are smaller than the bubbles from the carbonation.
39But exactlly how much does it make? I'm having a harry potter themed party so I need to know. At least ten people will be attending so its necessary to know ahead of time without having to waste the ingrediants by experimenting before the party.
40call me stupid, but the fizzy and the dairy together will just separate out. it's a great idea but it's a bit of a let-down when it curdles, unless theres some kind of way to stop that happening in which case I'm going to need some barrels...
