Have you ever thought to yourself, I could really use a cocktail right now, only to realize that your liquor cabinet is empty except for that random bottle of Amaretto? Instead of running to the corner store or the nearest bar, take a tip from the Spanish and make kalimotxo. While the name sounds exotic, the ingredients — coca-cola and red wine — are probably already in your kitchen. I know you're thinking: coke and wine? How could that possibly be any good? I too, thought that when I first heard of kalimotxo, however once you taste it, you'll love it! With the coke bringing out a spicy quality to the wine, the surprising combination is refreshing and satisfying.
Making kalimotxo is also a great way to use wine that's a couple days old. It's so easy to make it practically doesn't need a recipe, but I've put one together anyways. Check it out now and read more.
Original Recipe
Ingredients
ice
red wine (it can be any kind, but I like to use a Spanish red, like Rioja)
coca-cola
lemon wedge, optional for garnish
Directions
- Place the ice in a fun wine glass or goblet. Fill with red wine until about 2/3* full. Top with coke. If using, squeeze lemon and drop in. Stir with a straw, bar spoon, or finger. Enjoy!
Makes 1 drink.
*The proportions are totally up to you. If the drink tastes better with equal parts red wine and coke or 3/4 wine and 1/4 coke, make it that way.

Belstaff
I love red wine and diet coke.
1In Hungary we call this bor es kola.
2I will definitely try this..... I used to drink milk and Pepsi as a kid so why not try replacing the milk with wine.
3Actually, the worse the wine, the better it tastes
We don't use
"good" wines such as Rioja for this, just an average wine giving that the wine's taste is disguised by the coke.
Also, it's really popular to mix it up with a bit of blackberry liquor (alcoholic or not), it gives it a sweeter taste that most people love.
Try it, it's similar to sangría but much quicker to make
4I'd just use that random bottle of Amaretto and add some sweet and sour and make an Amaretto Sour! I don't drink cola and red wine isn't my thing.
5In Spain this is really popular amongst young people, because it's the cheapest thing to drink and also it tastes good.
6When i was in the States I tried it with Vanilla Coke and It was even better!
At first I was skeptical, until I remembered the odd looks I get when I order panaché. So I might give it a try.
7Hatertot--That's funny. I started drinking this mixture in Hungary!! Red wine and Cola. I think i was about 15 when some of the students at the school i went to ordered my sister and I this drink.
I haven't looked back since.
Spanish fan--i agree. somehow the worse the table wine the better the drink. though the same can't be said for a white wine and Sprite. :\
8I'll try this with diet soda sometime.
9my cousin mixes her wine with soda- and i thought she was just weird lol
10This is why I love this website (and partysugar!!) where else would I find a recipe like this? I can't wait to try it
