Have You Ever Hosted a Cookie Swap?

The San Francisco Chronicle recently published a story about the rise of the cookie swap. A cookie swap is a holiday party in which guests are asked to bring several batches of homemade cookies. The cookies are exchanged at the event, and everyone walks away with an assortment of delicious treats. The article talks about the books, websites, and groups devoted to the popular party, but I'm wondering how many people actually host and attend cookie swaps? With the holiday season about to kick into full swing, there may be one on your agenda. Are you cookie swapping this December?

Every year for the past 4 years a group of us have gotten together for a cookie exchange. We enjoy the talking, munching and congregation. This year due to so many scheduling conflicts it will be after January 1st. A bummer but at least we still get to enjoy the cookies.

I love making cookies. Since I had my first baby, 24 years now, I have given huge plates of cookie assortments to neighbors and co-workers. I try to do themes like classics, or vintage cookie recipes, or candies, etc. etc. Since then, I've added the typical 'bring 5 dozen' cookie exchange with neighorhood ladies. I think it is so much fun that I've also started hosting them for my daughters, getting them into the spirit of Cookie Giving. They are each allowed to invite a maximum of 5 girls (or boys) and we ask for a smaller number of cookies from the kids. It is a great way for them to learn how to mingle with each others friends, and be a hostess. Plus, it is fun to teach their friends about the tradition. Some have done it before, some have never done it, but they ALWAYS ask to be invited back!

I'm usually the one giving a big plate of cookies to each of my friends. I only have one other friend who likes to bake so it would be a small exchange. ;)

I hosted them every year growing up for all my little friends or should i say my mother and I hosted it. Everyone brought their homemade cookies (their best recipes) - one plate for sharing and one for who ever would get your cookies. It was the best. Also we were decked out in adorable holiday dresses, drank tea and cider and sometimes had a gift exchange -- oh and there were games -- it was oh so much fun, I don't remember what year I stopped, but I miss it.

my friend jessica has a cookie making party every xmas. we all bring our favorite recipes and everyone goes home with a large goodie bag. Sugar and wine — is there a better way to spend a sunday afternoon?!

My book club does a cookie swap each December. We bake a dozen for each of the other girls and an extra dozen which we donate to a nursing home (each person makes 8 dozen total.) It's a great way to get new recipes and lets me combine the variety of cookies into great neighbor/ co-worker gifts. It's work, but worth it!

I've only done this once. After I made dozens and dozens of very nice, homemade cookies - we had our swap. One lady brought in store bought candy canes with the tips dipped in white chocolate. I either fell for it and worked harder than I had to, or she took the easy way out. Either way, I'd rather have a variety of my own cookies than take a chance on what I'll get from others.
