Are There Too Many Chef Shows on TV?

We've already talked about the abundance of dance shows on TV, but there's another genre that seems to be taking over the networks — competitive cooking.

We've already talked about the abundance of dance shows on TV, but there's another genre that seems to be taking over the networks — competitive cooking. NBC just picked up United Plates of America, a new series by the producers of Top Chef which will pit hopeful restaurateurs against each other for the ultimate prize of starting their own chain. The winner gets to open four locations on the night of the finale. That's a pretty cool gift package, but it has me thinking — don't we have enough of this programming on TV already?

The premise does sound more unique than most, but it used to be that the Food Network was the only TV cooking choice with its popular Iron Chef franchise. Since then, other channels have gotten in on the act, too, like Fox's Hell's Kitchen and of course Bravo with Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, Top Chef: Just Desserts . . . need I go on?

Of course, if you're a foodie, you may be excited to have yet another show for your TiVo queue, but I wonder if all of this is overkill. How about you?

Gordon Ramsay Swears at You: Love It or Hate It?

Now that another season of

Now that another season of Hell's Kitchen has wrapped, you may be wondering where you'll get your regular fix of foul mouthing, courtesy of Gordon Ramsay. Well, look no further than the website Gordon Ramsay Swears at You, which, at the push of a button, fulfills any sadistic need to have the irate chef blurt out expletives.

I got a kick out of staring at an optimistic image of Gordon, juxtaposed with voice-overs of him yelling swear words. Do you find it funny?

Hell's Kitchen Recap 5.3

Last night's episode of

Last night's episode of Hell's Kitchen was very interesting. Ironically, it was both one of the most disgusting challenges and one of the most glamorous episodes. I can't imagine being the losing team — their punishment was so revolting that I felt sick watching them — and I envied the winners, who took an extravagant trip to Santa Ynez wine country via private jet. Marco Pierre White: "You Have a Duty to Put Reality Into TV"

If you're a fan of reality cooking shows, you may have heard about NBC's upcoming show, Chopping Block, which airs March 11.

If you're a fan of reality cooking shows, you may have heard about NBC's upcoming show, Chopping Block, which airs March 11. The show stars Marco Pierre White, the UK's original bad-boy chef, who has been known to make even Gordon Ramsay cry.

When I spoke to White today, the Chopping Block host was, in stark contrast to his deviant reputation, incredibly gracious, even-keeled, and — dare I say it — sentimental. He denounced bad behavior in the kitchen and on his show ("I will not tolerate bad language or anybody raising their voice") and insisted on being called by his first name ("Marco's my name; chef's my trade"). The one negative thing he had to say, however, was about Hell's Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay's reality cooking show. Get to know the chef when you read more

Have You Ever Shucked a Scallop?

On last Thursday's episode of

On last Thursday's episode of Hell's Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay showed the chefs how to shuck scallops. I found the brief lesson to be incredibly informative, as I'd never shucked a scallop before. Have you?
